Being a working mother comes with its own set of challenges. I’ve experienced life as a stay-at-home mom, a working mom, and everything in between, and each phase brings its own unique frustrations. Right now, I’m navigating the world of working outside the home, and I’ve noticed several things that can really push me over the edge. Here are nine common irritations for working mothers.
1. The Surprise Vomit Incident
Picture this: it’s a Wednesday morning, and you’re nearly out the door with everyone geared up for the day when one of the kids suddenly gets sick. Cue a mad scramble to determine who stays home, who has the more critical work commitment, and the inevitable reminders about previous sick days—all while managing a cleanup operation. Oh, the joys!
2. Late Appointments
As a working parent, my schedule is tight. When a dentist, mechanic, or hair salon is running behind, the ticking clock feels like a time bomb. I can’t help but mentally run through the questions: “What’s next on my agenda? Can I afford to be late? Should I text someone? Is it better to reschedule or risk arriving late?” It’s a constant juggling act.
3. Early Morning Meetings
Having an 8 a.m. or even 9 a.m. meeting is a breeze for those without kids to wrangle. For us, mornings can feel like a chaotic mix of juggling tasks. Ideally, we’d get to the office with some time to spare, sip our coffee, and brace ourselves for the day ahead before dealing with “interesting insights,” courtesy of our less-than-brilliant colleague, Dave.
4. End-of-Day Requests
Just as you’re winding down at 4:49 p.m., here comes a coworker asking for a project update. Meanwhile, you’re trying to figure out how to make it to daycare before closing time. Dave, you could’ve asked earlier, but instead, you were busy discussing your weekend plans.
5. Unexpected School Closures
Major holidays? No problem! But random days off from school can be a real headache for working moms. When school is closed unexpectedly, it often means scrambling to find childcare or losing a day’s pay for babysitting.
6. Home Repairs
A broken dishwasher or a cable outage? Great. Now, someone has to stay home to wait for the repair person, and guess what? That someone is usually you.
7. The Unprepared Colleague
Most working mothers I know are super organized, which is necessary to keep everything running smoothly. So when Dave shows up to a meeting clearly unprepared, it can be infuriating. We may feel a bit scattered, but we don’t want to be perceived that way!
8. The Last-Minute Mess
I prefer to get dressed at the very last minute before leaving for work. But sometimes, a kid will need an extra hug or I forget something, leading to my toddler getting just enough time to smudge their sticky hands on my clean outfit.
9. Missing Dinner Ingredients
By the time I get home at 5:30, I usually have a meal in mind. But if I discover that someone has devoured the last egg or the leftover chicken, it sends me into a small frenzy, resorting to ordering pizza instead of whipping up a home-cooked meal.
Despite these challenges, there are many benefits to being a working mother, even when it feels chaotic. We usually juggle everything well—until someone throws up, that is.
