Lessons in Patience: A Package, a Medium, and Life’s Frustrations

Lessons in Patience: A Package, a Medium, and Life's Frustrationsself insemination kit

Recently, a package arrived for our 13-year-old son, unexpectedly early. He had been eagerly anticipating it, expecting delivery by Sunday evening as promised. When I pointed out that USPS doesn’t operate on Sundays, his excitement deflated, leaving him without the headphones he had meticulously researched and saved for until Monday—an entire day later than he had hoped.

In moments like these, I sometimes find myself growing frustrated with a child whose day can feel ruined over minor inconveniences. He is so accustomed to instant gratification that he struggles to cope with waiting. A simple droop of his shoulders reminds me of the many people around the world who endure far more significant challenges, unsure of where they will spend the night. I encouraged my son to find something to distract himself while he waited for his delivery.

I must admit, I’m a bit of a hypocrite. I can’t help but remember a breakfast meeting I had with a business associate who casually revealed that she moonlights as a medium. Once she mentioned that, all professional dialogue fizzled. I’m aware that there are individuals out there who profit from the gullible, offering fake messages from the deceased. Yet, I also believe there are genuine psychics, just as there are people who can do math or enjoy spiders. Just because it doesn’t resonate with me doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

Curious, I later signed up for a session with my medium friend. I was instructed to choose a burning question to focus on without sharing it with her. She would then dedicate time to think about me and relay whatever messages came through. After our session, she sent me a recording detailing her insights.

While I won’t disclose my specific question, it revolved around desires that have consumed my thoughts—perhaps a Mediterranean cruise, a ticker-tape parade, or a new wardrobe. Although, if I could have it my way, I’d prefer yoga pants to be acceptable professional attire and flip-flops to become the new power shoe.

However, my medium had no advice about parades, cruises, or footwear. Instead, she described my spirit guide as a man resembling Roberto Benigni, dressed in colorful workout gear, scampering down a railway track while munching on peaches and popcorn. If only that made sense in the context of my question!

If this whimsical spirit guide in spandex is any indication, perhaps it’s a reminder that I won’t always get immediate answers. I need to relax and allow things to unfold naturally, which is a frustratingly familiar message that often leads me to sulk about my wants.

There’s a route I take between my home and downtown that I often believe might be faster if I’m running late. With no traffic, and if all the lights are in my favor, I could shave a couple of minutes off my commute. Yet, there’s one traffic light I’ve dubbed the “punishment light.” This light seems to stay red for an eternity, turning green well before I reach it, forcing me to wait several minutes before I can cross.

The term originated from the show Weeds, which I used to enjoy until the plot became convoluted. This light serves as a perfect metaphor for the frustrations in life that appear to be designed solely to test my patience, much like my son’s package that was scheduled for Monday but ended up arriving early—bringing him immense joy.

Sometimes, the punishment light is just the universe nudging me to take a breath and relax. Other times, it’s simply a frustrating traffic signal. And occasionally, to my surprise, a package I thought would arrive later shows up sooner, brightening my son’s day.
