The Everyday Adventures of a Stay-at-Home Mom Who Seems to Do Nothing
When my little one, Max, reached six months, I found myself at a crossroads. My salary barely covered daycare costs, I longed to be with my baby, and the grind of work was draining. As much as I enjoyed my job, the struggle didn’t seem worth it anymore. So, I handed in my resignation and embraced a new role.
From corporate meetings to pajama days, I transitioned to being a full-time mom. I won’t lie; I was looking forward to lounging around, watching daytime TV, and snacking on Cheez-Its while Max happily bounced in his chair. I even stocked up on a series of novels to enjoy during my newfound free time. Surely, managing the household and caring for my baby wouldn’t leave me too busy.
Initially, I thought all SAHMs spent their days doing nothing. However, two years into this journey, I’ve learned that those perceptions are far from the truth. For example, when Max was teething, his naps were sporadic, often only lasting 15 minutes after an exhausting 30 minutes of rocking. It was heart-wrenching to see his tired little face, so I’d sit in the rocking chair for hours, simply holding him.
Then came the toddler phase. Our home turned into a playground filled with potential hazards. Max was determined to walk before he turned ten months, launching himself at every sharp edge in sight. His little body bore the testament of his adventures with bruises and scrapes. To keep him safe, I spent days baby-proofing every corner, which felt like an endless task.
Ah, the “terrible twos.” It was as if a mischievous switch flipped in Max the moment he turned two. The boy who once played quietly with toys suddenly developed a knack for climbing the furniture and jumping off. I can’t tell you how many times I had to dash across the room to catch him mid-leap. It became clear that my primary role was to keep a watchful eye on him every second.
Of course, there are those precious moments when Max is calm, allowing me to sneak in some chores or even write a few words. And let’s not forget the blissful hour of nap time, where I sometimes savor a cup of coffee or (gasp!) catch a quick nap myself.
However, that trilogy of novels I bought? It’s still gathering dust. And opening a box of Cheez-Its is no longer a solo affair; it’s usually followed by a chorus of “Mama, I want some!” The closest thing to a soap opera I’ve seen lately is an episode of a kids’ show. Good luck trying to contain a toddler in a bouncer, by the way!
I’m not complaining; this life was my choice, and it’s the right one for our family. Sure, from the outside, it may look like I’m doing “nothing,” but in the world of toddler chaos and endless crumbs, every moment counts.
