As if navigating the subway isn’t challenging enough, a group of misguided individuals has taken it upon themselves to distribute body-shaming cards to unsuspecting commuters. Passengers on the London underground, simply going about their day, are being handed cards emblazoned with the word “FAT” on the front, accompanied by an appalling message on the back that reads:
“Our organization harbors contempt for overweight individuals. We resent the vast amount of food you consume while countless others suffer from hunger. We disapprove of the funds wasted on NHS treatments for your selfish appetites. We fail to understand why you don’t realize that eating less will make you happier, healthier, and possibly help you attract a more desirable partner instead of a so-called ‘chubby-lover.’
Additionally, we take issue with the term ‘pig’ being used as an insult. You are not a pig; you are simply a fat, unattractive human.”
Emma Collins received one of these cards during her commute and took to Twitter to share her experience. She urged others to spread the word:
“I was handed this card this morning on the subway and I would appreciate it if people could tweet and share this everywhere. I am not personally affected, as I’m below the national average weight, but this is cruel and cowardly. It could really hurt those battling self-esteem issues or eating disorders. Please share if you’re as outraged as I am. And to whoever made this card—spell check exists!”
Reports from The Guardian detail that the card was placed on Collins’ lap by a middle-aged man just before he exited the train. Another witness, Oliver Smith, tweeted about seeing a different woman receive a card, remarking on the audacity of these actions.
“Oh great—because there isn’t enough negativity in the world already. Why not just make people feel terrible?”
London Transport police have encouraged anyone who witnesses this behavior to report it. While there’s been no confirmation about who is behind this, the use of images on a site called Slimgur—a platform known for promoting anti-acceptance views—has led to speculation. The term “shitlord,” often used online to describe those who oppose body positivity, might suggest that these actions are linked to individuals previously banned from Reddit’s fat-shaming sub-forums.
Unfortunately, there will always be individuals who choose to spread misery. Yet, the existence of such negativity often prompts reflection on their own unhappiness. It’s easy to feel pity for these adults who resort to creating poorly constructed flyers and cowardly tossing them at strangers before scurrying away like children misbehaving.
