Parenting is a continuous journey of growth, filled with surprises at every turn. After more than a decade and raising four children, I still find myself questioning my choices regularly. However, through my experiences, I’ve gathered a few nuggets of wisdom I’d like to share:
- Baby wipes are essential—even long after your little ones have outgrown diapers. Keep a stash in your home, your purse, and your car. Extra packs are a lifesaver when supplies run low unexpectedly.
- If you find yourself running late, watch out—someone will inevitably have a poop-related crisis. It’s practically a rule of nature!
- Sometimes, it’s important to swallow your pride and admit when you’re wrong to your child, even though it doesn’t feel great.
- The books you find tedious will somehow become your child’s absolute favorites, read on repeat.
- Nothing compares to the wrath of a toddler who hasn’t had their nap. They clearly missed the memo about napping being crucial.
- There will be moments when you envy your friends without kids—just a little bit.
- Potty training is a walk in the park compared to teaching your child how to properly wipe.
- Every heartbreaking news story about kids will resonate with you like never before.
- Prepare for the realization that nice things are a distant memory.
- You’ll find yourself reminding them to use “please” and “thank you” constantly, yet let slip one curse word, and they’ll repeat it endlessly, relishing in the awkwardness it creates.
- You’ll catch yourself eating the least appealing leftovers, like cold chicken nuggets.
- You’ll start to sound alarmingly similar to your own mother, whether you like it or not.
- Just when you think they’re being quiet, it’s the perfect opportunity for them to make noise or engage in a chaotic activity while you’re on the phone.
- You are not alone in this wild ride. Check out the community at the Scary Mommy Confessional for solidarity.
- When you buy a food item in bulk that they once loved, watch the enthusiasm fade to zero, leaving you with a pantry full of forgotten snacks.
- Agreeing with a casual “mm-hmm” without really listening can lead to unexpected consequences.
- You’ll find a strange excitement in your child’s toilet training journey—who knew this would become a topic of joy?
- Kids can be pretty gross, no denying that.
- The anger you feel when your child is treated unfairly is unlike any other.
- Just because they can bathe themselves doesn’t mean they will come out clean.
- Allowing them to grow up and become independent can be a bittersweet experience.
- Your neat and tidy home is unlikely to be a priority for your kids.
- Kids have a unique talent for announcing private matters at the loudest volume possible.
- Cleaning car seats? A serious chore you never anticipated.
- You’ll be amazed at how much they complicate your life while simultaneously filling it with love.
- When your child is ill, trust me, the Internet won’t help—just call the pediatrician.
- The more effort you pour into dinner, the less likely they are to eat it.
- The things you vowed never to allow? Expect to let them slide at least 75% of the time.
- If you think babies are pricy, just wait until they grow into kids who can ask for everything.
- Always have a plunger within reach. It’s a necessity.
- No matter how well-prepared you feel, you’ll still get blindsided by unexpected questions about sex or hygiene products.
- Keeping an eye on your child’s online activities is an unfortunate but necessary task.
- “What did you do at school today?” will often yield the infamous “nothing” unless you probe deeper.
- If you want them to open up, try doing something relaxing, like reading or sneaking away to the bathroom.
- Mom guilt? Oh, it’s real.
- You know you should cherish every moment while they’re little (or so every older person in the grocery store says), even though it’s tough.
- The years fly by quickly, even when some days feel endless.
- Silence during the toddler phase? Definitely raises a red flag!
- Parenting is challenging, mistakes happen, and all you can do is learn and move forward.
- The Tooth Fairy sometimes needs a reminder on her phone, just like the rest of us!
- Kids hide things everywhere, so always check pockets, drawers, and under cushions.
- Many baby gear “essentials” are just space-hogs, but those vibrating bouncy seats? Absolutely necessary!
- Learn to say no when it counts, even if it’s hard.
- Trust your parental instincts—they often know best.
- You might be shocked (or horrified) by the amount of laundry you do, considering they love to run around naked.
- Don’t toss those old towels; they’ll come in handy during stomach bugs.
- The one time you leave without a clean diaper or extra outfit is the one time you’ll need it.
- Always have snacks on hand.
- Handing over your phone or tablet for a moment of peace is totally acceptable—educational apps make it a win-win.
- Everyone will have an opinion on your parenting style, but remember, they don’t know your kids like you do. As long as your little ones are happy and safe, you’re doing great!
Being a parent is an incredible adventure, filled with challenges and joys. Mistakes will happen, and awkward moments will arise, but each experience will teach you something valuable and provide you with stories to share with your children’s future partners.
