Embracing My True Self: A Heartfelt Letter to My Future Wife

From a young age, I dreamed of love and companionship. At just five years old, I pictured a life filled with joy, envisioning meeting you by 25, starting a family by 30, and experiencing pure happiness together.

My journey took a significant turn when I was diagnosed with autism at age four. It led me through a maze of therapy sessions and challenges that shaped me into the man I am today. Now, I speak across various states, sharing my story and the triumphs of living with autism, often with you by my side, cheering me on as my greatest supporter.

In our relationship, I promise to offer you my unwavering love every single day. I have come a long way from being a child who shied away from touch due to sensory overload to someone who welcomes affection. I understand that communication is key, especially during disagreements, and I will strive to view things from your point of view. When I need a moment to regroup, I’ll let you know. And when we celebrate our achievements, I’ll always express how proud I am of you.

Our wedding day will be a milestone filled with joy, made even more special by your presence. As we discuss the possibility of having children, I’ll look to my own parents for wisdom based on their experiences with me. My aspiration is to be the kind of father my dad was—steadfast in both good times and bad.

Love has always been a yearning of mine, often accompanied by a swirl of nerves and excitement. As a child, it made me uneasy, especially amidst the bullying I faced. A classmate once told me I would never find someone because I was different, a comment that stung deeply. But I refused to let those words dictate my future. I’ve had relationships, but none compare to what I feel for you. I knew it was not a question of if, but when I would find someone like you.

Thank you for accepting me wholly, quirks and all, and for being the love I have longed for throughout my life. Our love feels tranquil and fulfilling, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I will always be grateful for you.

This letter was inspired by a beautiful piece I read on The Mighty, “A Love Letter to My Neurotypical Husband, From Your Autistic Wife,” by Hannah LeeAnn Pryde.
