The New Year’s Aspirations Every Parent Hopes Their Child Will Embrace

As we dive into the new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on our hopes and dreams—especially for our little ones. If you’re anything like me, you might have already given up on your own resolutions, or perhaps you never even made any! However, I can’t help but wish my child would take a few on board. Despite my best efforts in parenting, there are still several areas where my 5-year-old could use a little nudge in the right direction.

So, I’ve compiled a whimsical list of aspirations that I would love to see my child tackle this year. While I know that resolutions may not hold much weight for a kindergartner, it’s fun to dream about what could be possible.

  • Try to eat dinner
  • Opt for healthier options
  • Appreciate the meal I spent hours preparing
  • Enjoy the food I heated up for you
  • Consume these two sugar packets
  • Just eat something!
  • Finish your meal a bit quicker
  • Tidy up your clothes
  • Clean your room
  • Take responsibility for personal hygiene!
  • Go to bed on time (or at all)
  • Sleep more soundly
  • Stay in bed until sunrise
  • Pretend to be asleep
  • Just lie still and keep quiet for a few hours?
  • Show kindness
  • Stand up for yourself
  • Avoid hitting
  • Use your words (preferably nice ones)
  • Skip the bad language
  • Engage in conversation with us
  • Share your day!
  • Keep the volume down
  • Limit the chatter
  • Don’t talk back
  • Maybe just stop talking altogether?
  • Share willingly
  • Kindly return that to me
  • Demonstrate respect
  • Use your manners, please
  • Say “please”
  • Say “thank you” (and again!)
  • Oh, and could you SHOW some gratitude for once?
  • Say “you’re welcome”
  • Cut back on screen time

Life is hectic enough, so sometimes I just wish they’d go watch some TV instead.

In summary, while we may not achieve all of these goals, it’s fun to imagine what our kids might aspire to. Here’s to hoping for a year filled with growth, laughter, and maybe a little bit of cooperation!
