Could an extra cup of coffee help counteract the effects of that evening glass of wine? As a mom, I often find myself torn between whether it’s too late for coffee or too early for wine. If faced with the ultimatum of choosing between the two, I’d probably just give you a puzzled look before walking away—because who can choose?

There’s something special about the bond moms share with coffee and wine. While I haven’t explored why this connection exists, I do know that coffee is essential and wine is simply delightful. Surprisingly, recent research suggests that our balancing act between the energizing properties of coffee and the soothing effects of wine may actually be beneficial. A new study indicates that drinking multiple cups of coffee daily could reverse some liver damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

Researchers from the University of Southampton reviewed data from nine different studies involving over 430,000 participants. According to Yahoo Health, they discovered that consuming just two extra cups of coffee each day was associated with a 44% lower risk of liver cirrhosis. The findings revealed that one cup a day could reduce the risk by 22%, while two cups offered a 43% decrease, three cups a 57% decrease, and four cups a whopping 65% reduction.

That said, this doesn’t mean we should be sipping wine chased with coffee all day long. The coffee in question refers to the plain, unadulterated kind—not those sugary, calorie-laden caramel lattes. The researchers are still unpacking the various chemical compounds in coffee to identify which ones offer these benefits.

“It’s remarkable that coffee consumption, a widely available and affordable beverage, may lower the risk of cirrhosis,” notes Dr. James Parker, the lead author of the study, in an interview with the NY Post.

Sure, we know that scientific studies often contradict each other, and next week we might hear that both coffee and wine are harmful again. But for now, let’s raise our mugs to coffee! And our glasses to wine! And perhaps mix in a little of both for good measure. Infinity!
