Growing up, I remember the pressure to conform. At school, there was an unspoken rule about how to look, act, and what interests to have in order to fit in with the crowd. We all wore similar clothes, listened to the same music, and gathered at the same places each weekend. This cycle continued until graduation, at which point we scattered in different directions: some pursued higher education, others went straight to work, and a few were left wandering. I was one of those who felt lost.
For much of my youth, I mimicked others, striving to fit in and acquire the skills society deemed necessary. When school ended, I found myself aimless and unsure of my next steps. My attempts at college were challenging, and I ultimately felt defeated. I coasted through grade school, often relying on my humor to gain teachers’ sympathy rather than earning their respect.
I am not sharing this to reach out to young students but rather to engage parents. Reflecting on my upbringing, I wish my parents had encouraged me to embrace my individuality, to dare to be different, and to explore my creativity. That encouragement never came.
Now, as a father to twin boys who are just six months old, I often think about their futures. Will they be bullied? Will they find popularity? Will they channel their creativity? It’s natural for any father to ponder the paths their children will take. I don’t intend to control every aspect of their lives, but I want to support them through life’s challenges.
My goal is to know when to encourage them and when to step back. I believe that while we must forge our own paths, parents play a crucial role in guiding their children from an early age. I don’t have all the answers—I’m still learning myself. However, I aim to inspire my kids to embrace their uniqueness.
I’ll teach them that fear is a choice, although sometimes it’s okay to choose it. I’ll stress that fitting in doesn’t equate to being true to oneself. Education is important, but I want them to understand that it might not always make immediate sense. Most importantly, I want to be a listening ear, hoping for the wisdom to respond thoughtfully.

In summary, my mission as a parent is to raise children who think independently and embrace their unique identities, ensuring they are equipped with the tools to navigate life’s complexities.
