One in Three American Families Face Diaper Affordability Issues—Here’s How You Can Make a Difference

It’s no surprise that many families in the U.S. are facing financial difficulties. However, have you ever considered what “struggling” truly means for these households? A staggering one in three American families experience what’s known as “diaper need,” which means they find it challenging to afford a sufficient supply of diapers.

In response to this pressing issue, the White House has called for efforts to “expand access to affordable diapers for the nation’s most vulnerable families.” Various organizations, including online retailers like Jet.com, diaper brands such as Huggies, and nonprofit groups, are teaming up to improve diaper accessibility for those in need.

Following the White House’s initiative, Huggies has pledged to donate an impressive 22 million diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network. Kimberly-Clark, Huggies’ parent company, has been actively addressing diaper need for years, having served as a founding sponsor of the NDBN since 2010 and donating over 160 million diapers to date. “It’s heartening to see this issue gain national attention, and we are committed to our role in fighting diaper need,” expressed Lisa Montgomery, president of Kimberly-Clark’s baby and child care division in North America.

From now until April 10, for every diaper donated through Huggies Rewards, the company will match up to 1 million donations—potentially bringing the total to 24 million diapers for babies in need this year.

If Huggies isn’t your go-to brand, there are still plenty of ways to get involved:

  • Share the message with #DiaperGap across your social media platforms.
  • Locate a nearby diaper bank and contribute.
  • Consider signing up as a diaper distributor. Nonprofits may qualify for Jet.com’s Community Diaper Program, allowing them to purchase Cuties Economy Plus Packs at a reduced price for distribution to families in need. For those not affiliated with a nonprofit, Cuties Economy Plus Packs will be available for purchase on Jet in late April.

The White House’s press release emphasizes, “We want every child to flourish and reach their full potential. We can achieve this by leveraging modern economic tools to assist all Americans, as no family should have to choose between their child’s health and paying for utilities.”
