A Family Getaway vs. A True Vacation

We’re off on a getaway! Although, I hesitate to call it a true vacation since my toddler will be tagging along. Yes, I’m taking a week off from work and heading to the beach, but I’m not sure how much “relaxation” will actually occur, as “relaxation” isn’t exactly my little one’s specialty.

His middle name could very well be “GET DOWN FROM THERE! YOU’RE GOING TO HURT YOURSELF!”

When I think of a vacation, I usually envision long mornings of sleeping in, leisurely reading, and enjoying a few drinks. But with a toddler in the mix, those typical activities become either nearly impossible or wildly transformed.

Here’s a list of ways I suspect our family getaway won’t quite resemble a real vacation:

  1. Reading
My partner and I made a few last-minute book purchases online, but I could almost hear my computer snickering as I hit “checkout.” The chance of us lounging on the beach, books in hand, is about 8 million to one. I’m pretty sure most of the reading I’ll end up doing involves GPS directions and stories about trains.
  2. Sleeping
This time, it’s not just my computer laughing at me; it’s my son. He’s set in a 6:30 a.m. wake-up routine, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a Sunday, a Wednesday, or if he’s sleeping in one of those sci-fi sleeping pods—his internal clock is my eternal adversary. It doesn’t recognize that I’m on vacation, and why would it? To him, every day is a holiday!
  3. Relaxing
Lately, my son’s favorite hobbies include ignoring us and being hyper. Combine those delightful traits with his ability to talk back and lie, yet still be toddler-clumsy enough to spin in circles in the middle of a busy street, and relaxation isn’t exactly on the agenda.
  4. Drinking
Oh, there will definitely be some drinking—lots of it. Most of it will be crammed into the fleeting three-hour window between my son finally falling asleep and us promptly passing out, but it will happen!
  5. Miscellaneous Fun
What else do people do on vacation? Catch a movie? Toddler. Go out for dinner? Toddler. Have some adult time? Toddler. Mini-golf might actually happen, though “play” could be a stretch.

I’m not saying we won’t have fun—it will be enjoyable. I’m genuinely looking forward to it! But it’s just not the same as a vacation without kids. At least I’ll probably be less hungover. In summary, while a family getaway can be chaotic and far from the traditional relaxation one might seek on a vacation, the joy of creating memories with your little ones is priceless. Embrace the chaos, and don’t forget to enjoy the little moments!
