As a father of three, I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments during my wife’s pregnancies. Reflecting on those times, I want to share some lessons learned, hoping to help other soon-to-be dads avoid my blunders.
- “I don’t get why you’re so exhausted.” Seriously, Jake? You’re clueless. Your wife is nurturing a human being inside her! What have you been doing? Just lounging around? Understand that creating life is a monumental task, and if she says she’s tired, just acknowledge it. It’s a huge deal!
- “Every time I see your baby bump, I feel a little anxious.” Look, it’s understandable to be nervous about the responsibilities of parenthood. But remember, your wife is feeling those same worries, not to mention dealing with physical changes and emotional turmoil. Instead of expressing fear, be supportive and try to embrace the journey. Focus on the joy of bringing a new life into the world!
- “Why are you crying again?” Stop acting like it’s a burden. You still have the luxury of emotional control while she’s navigating a whirlwind of hormones. When she cries, it’s not about you; it’s about her experience. Offer her a hug, ask how you can help, or simply give her space. It’s really not that complicated.
- “It’s late; do we have to get Taco Bell?” Remember that time you craved tacos at midnight? You jumped up without hesitation! So when your pregnant wife has a craving, don’t complain. Just go out and get her that burrito. It’s not about you; it’s about supporting her during this time.
- “You’re so hormonal; it’s driving me nuts.” Wow, Jake, way to state the obvious! Pregnancy brings all sorts of emotional ups and downs. Yes, it’s challenging, but that doesn’t mean her feelings aren’t valid. If she has a meltdown over something small, remember that the real issue is the baby growing inside her. Show her compassion instead of frustration.
