11 Advantages of Not Experiencing Pregnancy

As a proud parent of three wonderful kids, none of whom I carried myself, I cherish our adoption journey. My decision to forgo pregnancy stemmed from various factors, including the concern of passing on my autoimmune condition to biological children. And you know what? Skipping out on pregnancy has its own unique benefits!

  1. No Odd Strangers Touching My Belly
While I do have to deal with random folks trying to touch my kids’ hairstyles, at least my midsection is off-limits!
  2. No Doctor’s Fees for Routine Exams
Forget the $25 charge for each pelvic exam, belly measurements, or those biweekly weigh-ins. I’ve saved a ton!
  3. No Awkward Twin Conversations
Even though we were open to adopting twins, I dodged the uncomfortable “Are you expecting twins?” questions from curious strangers.
  4. No Birthing Classes to Attend
Although I did sit through an extensive “preparing for adoption” workshop, it thankfully lacked the usual birthing class experiences—like watching slideshows of baby butt rashes!
  5. No Concerns About Genetics
There’s no need to fret over passing down my less-than-ideal traits, like my one protruding ear or anxious nature. Ironically, my kids can still resemble me despite having different genes.
  6. No Pressure for More Kids
The timeline of adoption is unpredictable, and it has nothing to do with romantic endeavors, so I’m free from awkward inquiries about when we plan to expand our family.
  7. No Dietary Restrictions
I can enjoy all my favorite foods—salami, large lattes, and tuna salad sandwiches. And yes, wine definitely counts as food!
  8. No Embarrassing Baby Shower Games
While I was fortunate to have two lovely baby showers thrown for me, I was spared the humiliation of games like “guess the size of the mom’s belly” or “smell the chocolate in the diaper”!
  9. No Pressure to Share Names or Gender
With adoption, we had no clue whether our child would be a boy or a girl, and we chose names in collaboration with their birth families.
  10. No Sagging Post-Pregnancy Issues
I’m still as perky as a twenty-something, although stretch marks did sneak in after my growth spurt during high school.
  11. No Expensive Maternity Wardrobe
Why do maternity clothes cost so much more? I’ll never understand why a simple T-shirt marked “maternity” comes with a hefty price tag.

Adoption, while not without its challenges (think paperwork and social worker interviews), has truly been a joyful experience. Throughout our waiting period, we celebrated with margaritas, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
