Dear Kids,

If I were to meet an unfortunate fate, perhaps during my upcoming hot yoga class—thanks to my so-called “friends”—I want to share some pivotal life lessons that I hope you carry with you.

With all my love,
Mom

  1. Avoid Being a Jerk.
This is perhaps the most crucial advice I can give you. A “jerk” is someone who believes they’re superior to others and acts without regard for their feelings. Think about it: you can find jerks in all walks of life—from history (hello, Hitler) to the classmate who snubbed you during a birthday party. You’ll encounter them often, so be prepared.
  2. Don’t Assume You Know Everything.
While some people might seem like jerks by nature, remember that many have been shaped by their experiences. You never know the struggles someone is facing, so be willing to offer a second chance. If they remain a jerk afterward, then it’s time to move on.
  3. Stand Your Ground.
If a bully decides to pick on you, don’t hesitate to stand up for yourself. Sure, your teachers might advise you to “use your words,” but sometimes you need to make your point more emphatically. If they hit you again after your warning, give them a taste of their own medicine.
  4. Refrain from Saying ‘I Would Never…’
Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change who we are. So, try to avoid judging others too quickly for their decisions—you might find yourself in similar shoes one day.
  5. Say No to Drugs.
Honestly, has anyone ever benefited from drugs? Think of all the stars whose lives spiraled out of control. Just say no!

Now, onto the things you should embrace:

  1. Check Yourself Before You Leave the Restroom.
Make sure your teeth are clean, your shoes aren’t dragging toilet paper, and your zipper is up. You wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself. And if your friend has something stuck in their teeth, be a good buddy and let them know!
  2. Pass the Ball to Everyone.
In sports, it’s easy to favor your friends or the best players, but don’t forget about the other kids. Everyone deserves a chance to be part of the team, so share the ball, even if it means they might fumble.
  3. Be Around People Who Accept You.
You’re not perfect, and that’s okay! Surround yourself with those who appreciate you for who you are, quirks and all. True friends love you through the good and the bad.
  4. Dance When Asked!
If someone gathers the courage to ask you to dance, say yes! It’s just a dance, so let loose and enjoy the moment.
  5. Listen to the Wisdom of Older Generations.
We’ve lived through many ups and downs, made mistakes, and learned valuable lessons. Our experiences might help you navigate your own challenges, so don’t shy away from hearing our stories.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s about time I head to that hot yoga class!
