An Open Letter to My Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Dear Third Trimester,

Let’s cut to the chase: you can be quite a handful. Every expectant mother eagerly anticipates your arrival, only to find out that when you show up, it feels like a cruel prank. “Welcome, my dear,” you say, “but before you meet your little one, brace yourself for the next 12 weeks.” Twelve weeks? That’s three long months! About 90 days filled with sleepless nights dominated by acid reflux, frequent trips to the bathroom, and the occasional Charley horse. It’s no wonder the third trimester gets a bad rap; it’s the never-ending stretch that tests our patience and endurance.

Sure, we’ve all been through the ups and downs of pregnancy. The first trimester was tough, and the second had its challenges, but at least I could still wear most of my clothes. Then you arrive, and suddenly, I’m dealing with shirts that barely cover my growing belly and maternity jeans that feel like they’re squeezing the life out of me. Elastic only goes so far, after all!

Now comes the dilemma: to buy larger clothes or not? It’s only 12 weeks, but when you’re constantly adjusting your outfit to hide the underbelly that’s peeking out, it becomes a pressing concern. So, what do I do? I end up splurging on a new wardrobe because, let’s be honest, who wants to feel uncomfortable for 90 more days? And while we’re at it, why not treat myself to a nice handbag too? After all, I’ve saved quite a bit from skipping on cocktails and sushi.

As for the physical joys of the third trimester? Let’s just say I’ll spare you the gory details, but I’ll mention that sneezing has turned into a mini panic attack. A bowling ball on my bladder and the fear of a sneeze? That’s real fun right there.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not wishing you away. Deep down, I know that every moment with you brings me closer to meeting my little one. I just hope you take it easy on me! I’m not as spry as I was during our first encounter seven years ago.

So here’s to you, third trimester. You might be a challenge, but the promise of a new life makes it all worthwhile. T-minus 90 days and counting. Let’s do this!

Love,
An (impatient) mama-to-be who might just realize navigating the third trimester is easier than raising four kids.
