Embracing the Final Days of Pregnancy

Dear Little One,

Though your arrival is still two weeks away, our doctor has hinted that you might decide to make your debut sooner than anticipated. The news left me breathless, not just from the realization of my body’s readiness but also from the overwhelming rush of emotions. The months have flown by, and the reality is sinking in — you are coming soon.

In a whirlwind of activity since that appointment, I’ve found myself scrambling to tackle laundry, sanitize every surface in our home, and keep on top of the endless food spills and toy messes that seem to multiply with every passing day. I worry about what our space will look like when you arrive and how I will juggle the chaos of three little ones.

Truthfully, I don’t feel prepared, in part due to the delightful havoc your siblings create while I try to clean. I often feel drained and anxious, which sometimes overshadows the excitement and gratitude I should feel about your upcoming arrival.

So here are my promises to you, our family, and to myself during this bittersweet moment in our journey together. As I count down the days until you join us, I vow to savor every precious moment of this pregnancy.

  1. I will temporarily set aside the never-ending chores and meal prepping. Instead, I’ll join your siblings in play, embracing the mess and laughter that fills our home. We’ll imagine what your name might be (your sister seems to favor something like Sparkly Unicorn) and marvel at your movements as we race toy cars and build towering forts.
  2. I will allow myself to feel the bittersweet nature of this transition. As I tuck your siblings into bed each night, I might shed tears for the changes ahead, but I will also envision the joyful moments to come: the laughter you’ll share, the sweet sibling bonds that will grow, and the memories we’ll create together.
  3. I will shift my focus away from the discomfort and anxiety surrounding labor. Instead, I’ll take a moment to connect with you, feeling your little life within me. I’ll wonder about your dreams and what you’ll look like, cherishing this unique connection we share that will soon evolve. I know soon enough, I’ll be holding you close, feeling your warmth and cherishing those tender moments.
  4. Lastly, I will embrace the fleeting beauty of this phase of pregnancy. During this special time, I’m reminded of how extraordinary this experience is. Although it’s easy to get caught up in the tasks at hand, I feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity to hold you close for just a little while longer.

As we prepare for your arrival, the excitement and anticipation fills our hearts and home. While the journey may not always be perfect, I’ve learned to appreciate the small moments, even the messy ones, and to be grateful for the load I carry each day. I can’t wait to look into your eyes and share just how much love I already have for you.

Love,
Mom
