As a mom in my 30s, I must admit that I have little say in what counts as trendy slang. I’ve even Googled a few terms, just to figure out why everyone was saying goodbye to this mysterious Felicia. Clearly, consulting Urban Dictionary to stay hip isn’t quite the right vibe, and I recognize that I’m not exactly the best at using these phrases correctly. However, I do have a solid grasp of parenting lingo. I can communicate in toddler-ese like a pro and can easily distinguish between a baby saying, “Ma! Ma!” and “Ma? Ma?” Given all that moms contribute to the world, I think we should have a say in defining the latest slang.
1. On Fleek
Real version: When something is exceptionally good, e.g., “This outfit is on fleek.”
Mom version: Refers to a bargain from the local flea market, e.g., “I snagged this outfit on fleek for just $10!” Check out those dresses and pinwheels—both on fleek!
2. Netflix and Chill
Real version: A euphemism for casual sex (which may or may not involve actual Netflix).
Mom version: A cozy night of binge-watching House of Cards, followed by crashing at 8:30 p.m. Here’s to settling in with Frank Underwood!
3. Bae
Real version: An affectionate term meaning “before anything else.”
Mom version: A cute shorthand for bagel, e.g., “I could really go for a bae with a schmear.”
4. Squad
Real version: Your close-knit group of friends.
Mom version: The kids, e.g., “Sorry for the delay! It took forever to get the squad ready.”
Bonus: Squad Goals: Achieving a parenting win, e.g., “No sibling squabbles today! #SquadGoals!”
5. Stay Woke
Real version: Being conscious of social issues.
Mom version: Just trying to survive on minimal sleep, e.g., “The baby kept me up all night. I’m just trying to stay woke.” Stay woke like a boss!
By the time you read this, many of these terms may have already faded into obscurity. I can’t wait to mom-ify the next set of slang that comes along. Until then, bye, Felicia! (And I mean that in the most pleasant way—wishing you a lovely day!)
