The Joy of Growing Up with Cousins

When my brother and his partner visited one chilly evening to share the news that they were expecting, I was overjoyed. While I was thrilled to welcome their new addition and excited for my brother, what truly made me happy was knowing my kids, aged 7 months and 2 years at the time, would have cousins to grow up with—something I never had.

Fast forward nine years, and now there are seven kids among my siblings and me. Sharing this journey has brought immense joy to our family. Growing up with cousins offers so many gifts, including:

  1. Stronger Sisterly Bonds

Not only do we gather like a lively school of fish watching the kids play, but we also share experiences about childbirth, late-night feedings, and toddler tantrums. My sisters are my go-to for honest opinions; they won’t just tell me what I want to hear. We also provide an escape for each other, knowing when we need a breather from parenting chaos. Our meet-ups often involve indulging in snacks and drinks, eagerly anticipating our return to our little ones.

  2. Safe Sleepovers

My children have the joy of sleepovers, and I can relax knowing they’re in good hands. I don’t need to worry or bombard my sisters with texts for updates; they understand my need for reassurance and send me pictures and updates throughout the night. Plus, they aren’t shy about letting me know when it’s time to pick up my kids!

  3. An Unbreakable Connection

Since they’ve known each other since birth, their bond is incredibly strong. They are more than just friends; their connection runs deep. My daughter, who doesn’t have a sister, considers her cousin her best friend. They’ve even planned to be each other’s maid of honor, created a secret language, and regularly swap clothes. It’s truly heartwarming to witness.

  4. A Supportive Tribe

Trust me when I say, if one cousin is in trouble, the others are right there by their side—especially if someone is teasing the youngest. That’s a lesson no child will forget quickly.

  5. A Shared Understanding

As they mature, they will undoubtedly encounter family quirks. They’ll be able to confide in each other, sharing thoughts like, “Why did Aunt Lisa lose it again? She really needs to calm down.” They’ll always have a safe space to vent and someone who genuinely understands.

While I’m not rushing time, I eagerly anticipate the day they reflect on their childhood experiences together. I suspect they’ll say it meant everything.
