As my daughter approaches her first birthday next week, my wife and I celebrate an incredible milestone: we’ve successfully kept our little one alive for an entire year! Given our track record of killing every houseplant and occasionally forgetting to feed our cats, this feels monumental. To honor our daughter’s first year and the incredible journey we’ve embarked on as parents, I’d like to share some of the valuable lessons I’ve picked up along the way. Here they are, in no particular order:
- The Power of a Deep Sigh. When stress hits — and believe me, it does, even while caring for the world’s most brilliant baby — I find myself releasing a loud, dramatic sigh. It’s as if I’ve just conquered a mountain. Well, maybe not quite like that, but it sure feels exhausting.
- Fear is Real. I never understood true fear until the moments before my wife’s C-section. While waiting for the doctors to prepare, I felt utterly alone and anxious. I even found myself praying, reminding me that sometimes, life’s biggest events really put things into perspective.
- Essentials Over Everything. Forget luxury items; the most crucial possessions we have are baby wipes. They’re worth their weight in gold, or maybe even more.
- Single Parents are Superheroes. The few times I’ve been left alone with our daughter while my wife traveled for work have shown me just how tough single parents are. I often forget to eat or shower during those days, and I have immense respect for anyone who does this solo.
- Peeing is an Olympic Sport. I’ve discovered that I can hold my bladder for an impressive duration as I prioritize my baby’s sleep over my own discomfort.
- Colors Matter. If you want to avoid being called out for dressing your daughter in “boy” colors, be prepared to stock up on pink outfits. Apparently, some people take these color choices very seriously.
- Fatigue Redefined. I thought I knew what tired meant, but then came the first 10 months of my daughter’s life — a whole new level of exhaustion.
- Nail Clipping is a Challenge. Trying to cut an infant’s fingernails is one of the most daunting tasks I’ve faced. The margin for error is terrifyingly small.
- True Beauty is in the Small Moments. Watching my daughter experience the ocean for the first time was a breathtaking reminder of the beauty in simplicity.
- Coffee is My Lifeline. I’ve become quite fond of coffee, while my wife, with her superhuman powers, prefers to remain caffeine-free.
- Balancing Work and Parenting is Tough. Juggling a job while caring for a tiny human can lead to frustration, but the joy that comes from those little smiles makes it all worthwhile.
- Cherish the Little Things. On tough days, there’s nothing quite as joyful as watching a baby face-plant into their birthday cake.
- Teaching Sleep is Essential. Initially resistant to sleep training, we learned the importance of guiding our daughter to sleep through a helpful book. It’s a process we now affectionately call “sleep teaching.”
- Beauty is Subjective. Watching my daughter devour a chicken wing is a sight more beautiful than many landscapes I’ve seen.
- Time Flies. Other parents warned me that kids grow up fast, but I never truly grasped it until my daughter started walking and talking. It all happens in a blink!
