In a remarkable display of self-documentation, photographer Mia Thompson decided to capture the profound moment of her own childbirth. As a seasoned photographer, she felt uniquely qualified to do so, believing that no one could depict this monumental event better than herself.
“I wasn’t sure if I would be able to manage it,” Thompson shares with enthusiasm. “I had planned to take the photos, but I was uncertain if I could truly pull it off.”
While typically focused on wedding and portrait photography, Thompson relished the opportunity to document her own labor and delivery. This pregnancy came as a joyous surprise; she already had an 8-year-old son and had faced years of challenges trying to conceive, including two miscarriages. This new arrival, lovingly referred to as a “rainbow baby,” symbolized hope and healing for her family.
Knowing the significance of the event, Thompson made it her mission to capture every moment herself, although her mother stepped in to take a few snapshots towards the end. From their arrival at the hospital to monitoring contractions, she documented the entire process.
The photographer also captured touching moments of her husband supporting her through the grueling 14-hour labor. With the doctors’ approval to continue snapping photos, she recorded the first glimpses of their daughter, baby Ava.
One of the most heartwarming moments, as Thompson recalls, was seeing her husband’s reaction when he first laid eyes on Ava. “He was in tears, overwhelmed with joy,” she notes.
In a unique twist, Thompson managed to take photos even while she was pushing. “I would bring the camera up to my face while I pushed, not knowing what I was capturing or if it would be in focus. But it helped me concentrate.”
And what mother wouldn’t want to focus on such an adorable face?
Ultimately, Thompson’s mother captured one of the most cherished images: the precious moment when mother and daughter met for the first time after delivery.
Life with baby Ava has been wonderful. “She’s such a calm and easygoing baby,” Thompson shares, “She sleeps well and is genuinely happy.” Someday, Ava will look back at these stunning photographs and appreciate her mother’s talent and the immense love that surrounded her birth.
