5 Reasons Pediatrician Visits Can Be a Hassle

In our household, a trip to the pediatrician is usually a last resort. Fever? Just some acetaminophen and we’ll see how it goes. Rash? A quick search online will help us decide. That cut seems minor — a little Neosporin and a bandage should do the trick.

Having navigated the world of parenting with four kids, I’ve found that the wait-and-see approach often suffices. I’m truly grateful that my children don’t face chronic health issues, keeping our pediatric visits relatively rare. Yet, there are unavoidable appointments for vaccinations and annual check-ups, reminding me why I’m not a fan of the pediatrician’s office.

1. Unexpected Copays

There I am, innocently checking in my child at the counter, always 15 minutes early. The receptionist asks the usual questions — has our address changed, is our insurance info still the same? Then, out of nowhere, she drops the news: “You have a $75 balance from your last visit. How would you like to settle that today?” I awkwardly dig for my debit card, trying to maintain my composure, all the while wondering how I missed this bill and what else I could’ve spent that money on.

2. Forms I Can’t Remember

Oh, the endless paperwork! So many forms with questions that leave me stumped. I can easily recall basic details like my kids’ birthdays, but when it comes to specifics like when they started standing on their own? Forget it. I’m standing there thinking, “He’s 11! How would I know?”

3. Germ-Infested Waiting Rooms

No matter the appointment time, waiting in the lobby is an unavoidable reality. I’d much rather be anywhere else than stewing in a place filled with germs. There’s a child next to me hacking their lungs out, another clutching a barf bag, and yet another looking feverish and miserable. My mind races with the thought of all the germs floating around, and I wish I could wrap my child in a bubble of hand sanitizer until we’re called back. The exam rooms are likely just as germy, but at least we’ll be out of the chaos of the waiting area.

4. Battered Kids

My children are always climbing, jumping, and wrestling, leaving them looking like they’ve been through a battle. I can’t help but worry that the pediatrician will think I’m neglecting them. They’re just active kids! I remember once my son had a sore that looked alarming — thankfully, he explained it was just a toy helicopter accident, but who knows what they’ll say next?

5. Kids Say the Darndest Things

When they’re little and can’t articulate their thoughts, it’s easy to present myself as the ideal parent. But once they start talking, watch out! They’ll blurt out things like, “Mom says pickles are a vegetable,” or “I watched my favorite movie three times in a row!” Suddenly, I’m on the receiving end of a disapproving look from the pediatrician, or worse — a lecture.

I recognize that access to quality healthcare is a privilege, and I’m thankful for the medical professionals available when my children need care. However, I still dread that germ-ridden waiting room.
