10 Reasons I’m Not Excited for the School Year to Begin

As summer comes to a close, I find myself in a state of mixed emotions. Sure, I know many parents are counting down the days until school starts, but I can’t help feeling a little reluctant. Yes, my kids have been bouncing off the walls all summer, but here are ten reasons why I’m not exactly ready for the school year to kick off.

  1. Goodbye Sleep Schedule
Seriously, I’ve finally settled into a glorious routine of staying up late and sleeping in. My kids have learned to entertain themselves in the mornings, allowing me to enjoy those precious extra hours of sleep. Now, I have to drag myself out of bed at the crack of dawn again? Ugh. Pass me a tissue, please!
  2. Morning Madness
Getting my son out of bed in the morning feels like defusing a bomb. It’s a delicate operation that can go wrong at any moment! Once I do manage to get him up, he stares blankly at his breakfast like a zombie, and I practically have to force-feed him to avoid a meltdown at school. Why can’t getting dressed be as simple as it should be? I even made a chart for him!
  3. Lunch Prep Crunch
Here’s the thing: I don’t mind making lunches, but doing it before my coffee is a whole other story! The cafeteria food? Let’s just say I’d rather not risk my son’s health with those questionable options. And to the super-organized parents who suggest packing lunch the night before—yeah, I admire you, but that ship has sailed for me.
  4. Grooming Pressure
During the summer, we embrace a laid-back approach to hygiene, but once school starts, the scrutiny ramps up. Teachers and other parents will be watching, and I can’t have my kid showing up with long hair or dirt under his nails. The pressure is real!
  5. Back to Real Shoes
After a summer filled with flip-flops and Crocs, putting on regular shoes feels like a form of torture for my son. Suddenly, everything is uncomfortable, and every little detail becomes a big deal. “There’s a wrinkle in my sock!” Seriously? I need another tissue here.
  6. Chaotic Schedules
The back-to-school season brings a whirlwind of activities, meetings, and deadlines. My phone calendar fills up faster than I can keep track. Summer was blissfully spontaneous, but now it’s all about structured chaos. Help!
  7. Homework Again?
After six hours of school, my child needs to tackle more learning at home? Really? I thought we were done with homework after college! This is not what I signed up for.
  8. Bedtime Battles
Gone are the days of flexible bedtimes. I now have to enforce a consistent sleep schedule so my kids are well-rested. It’s exhausting to make sure they get enough sleep to function—no more late-night back rubs to stay up later!
  9. Fundraiser Fatigue
Ah, yes, the dreaded fundraisers. Here’s a hundred bucks, school—just please leave me alone!
  10. Lost Playmates
When the big kids head back to school, my little one loses her playmate. While this might be a blessing for some, my kids are best friends, and she’ll be looking for someone to entertain her. I can already hear the endless “My Little Pony” scripts calling my name. Help me!

And if I’m being completely honest, I’ll miss my son while he’s away at school. There, I said it! I may complain about the chaos, but having him around brings me joy.

In summary, while I know many parents are ready for the school year, I find myself hesitating. The transition from summer to school means more structure, less sleep, and an onslaught of responsibilities that can be overwhelming.
