Tales From the Heart: Standing Together

Because my grandmother, a proud Portuguese woman, faced discrimination in Florida during the Jim Crow era, often being asked to leave establishments due to her beautiful, sun-kissed skin.

Because my son, blessed with that same rich complexion and tight, curly black hair, is frequently questioned by adults about the difference in skin tone between him and his fair-skinned sisters, even though they share strikingly similar features.

Because we must learn to look beyond color and recognize our shared humanity; I refuse to let my children grow up in a world where they are pigeonholed for someone else’s comfort.

Because I am the proud mother of two incredible daughters who are destined to make a mark on this world, and they don’t need permission to shine.

Because I am a 43-year-old woman with blue hair, happily married to a lifelong Republican who would rather abstain from voting than not support my choices (I’m still trying to win him over!).

Because I was raised by young parents who struggled to provide for us, relying on food stamps and welfare while living in a cramped apartment with shared bathrooms, and now, as a member of the top 1%, I am grateful yet always mindful that circumstances do not define a person’s worth or potential. Everyone deserves a chance.

Because I remain hopeful that, despite most of our friends backing a candidate like Trump (probably for financial reasons), deep down, they might support someone else in their hearts.

Because I choose to embrace hope and love in the face of hate, judgment, and division.

Because I believe in her capability to lead (and I’m battling intense anxiety about sharing this, worried it might jinx her).

I stand with you.
I. Stand. With. Her.
