Last week, while driving my kids around and flipping through radio stations, I stumbled upon one that was playing Christmas tunes. At first, I was taken aback, feeling like I had run into my boss at the grocery store in their pajamas—it just didn’t fit. But once I realized what I was hearing, I thought, “Oh no, not yet! It’s too early for the holidays!”
I was annoyed, much like when I find back-to-school ads splashed across my screen while I’m still enjoying summer. Don’t rush me, please! So, I tried to deny it. The holidays are not creeping up on us, I told myself. Not going to happen.
But one afternoon, as I listened to my kids bicker and read yet another disheartening news story, I had an epiphany: Let’s embrace the holiday spirit!
I know that diving into Christmas decorations this early goes against the unspoken rule of “No Christmas Before Thanksgiving.” After all, we haven’t even thawed the turkey, and pumpkin spice season is still in full swing. Yet, this year, I’m throwing caution to the wind.
Sure, it feels odd to hang tinsel while leaves swirl in the crisp autumn air, but who cares? While I appreciate Thanksgiving, I don’t have a strong attachment to the decor of that holiday. I’m ready to bid farewell to the pumpkins and dry leaves. We need some brightness in our lives!
I’m craving sparkle and shine—bright red ornaments against shimmering silver tinsel, twinkling lights, and festive tunes. Luckily, I have a decorative vase filled with leftover ornaments from last year and I never took down the outdoor lights, so we’re off to a great start! #lazinessforwin
Instead of waiting until after Thanksgiving, I’m hauling out the red and green bins today. I’ll be singing along to classic Christmas songs while I trim the tree. I might even watch “Love Actually” for the umpteenth time and chuckle at the hilarious antics in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”
I plan to spread holiday cheer by saying “Happy Holidays!” to strangers and indulging in pine-scented candles. I might splurge on some shiny decorations at the craft store, even though I’m not a crafty person. Who knows? I might even slap some silly Rudolph decals on my old minivan!
I’m determined to do whatever it takes to feel festive and joyful. If you’re one of those “wait until after Thanksgiving” folks, maybe keep your thoughts to yourself. Those who decorate early tend to be happier—it’s a fact!
Look, the world can feel overwhelming at times, and we all need to find joy wherever we can. So, I’m giving a big thumbs down to negativity by extending my holiday season. Forget the rules—let’s add some sparkle to our lives!
