I’m the MLM Lady You Might Love to Dislike

You’ve probably come across our posts on social media, received invites to our gatherings, or even felt a twinge of dread when you see a message pop up from us. We are the MLM ladies that some people love to dislike.

And I completely get why many have a strong aversion to those of us involved in multi-level marketing. The stereotypes exist for a reason, and they can be incredibly frustrating. Depending on our approach, we might add you to groups without asking first, or send friend requests to your mom’s aunt’s hairdresser to expand our network. Our social media feeds may seem like a never-ending stream of stock photos, memes, and promotions for our latest products.

Yes, we can be annoying—truly annoying. But many of us engage in MLM for a variety of motives, none of which are to make you unfollow us or light an effigy in our honor.

Some of us are drawn to MLM because we genuinely believe it offers a path to a life we aspire to live. While it may look like we’re just trying to sell you things you don’t want, for us, it represents the hope of a brighter future. The odds of striking it rich? Slim to none. But in my world, every little bit counts.

Others of us participate in MLM because we crave something that’s our own. We dedicate our days and nights to our families, often losing touch with our identities as individuals. These business models become a space for us as women—not just as mothers or wives—to reclaim our sense of self and remember that we are more than just caretakers.

Additionally, some of us want to demonstrate to our children that there are various ways to earn a living. We don’t have to be stuck in a 9-to-5 job we loathe for decades. We can work from home, travel while working, or become entrepreneurs. The possibilities are endless. The key is to show our kids that the journey to generating income isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

I hope that those in your newsfeed who are involved in these ventures respect your boundaries and your time. I trust they accept your “no” without resentment and ask for your permission before adding you to the same group over and over again. Even though their pages may feel like infomercials, I hope you can see the passion behind their frequent posts and understand that they’re pursuing something meaningful to them, just as you are.

In summary, while MLMs may be polarizing, it’s essential to understand the motivations behind our involvement. We seek identity, financial independence, and new opportunities for our families.
