A mom’s inspiring story about her C-section scar encourages others to appreciate the beauty in every birth experience.

Jessica Lane had a clear vision for the arrival of her second child. After her first birth, which was “not a horror story” but lacked some desired elements, she felt more informed and empowered. “I knew I had choices and looked forward to a shared experience with my husband,” she shared in a heartfelt post. However, life had a different plan in store for her.

At 32 weeks into her pregnancy, Jessica discovered that her baby was in a breech position. By the time she went into labor at 37 weeks, there was no change. “In California, midwives can’t deliver breech babies outside of a hospital, and there were no doctors in my area willing to take the risk,” Jessica explained. Reluctantly, she opted for a C-section.

“I was terrified,” she admitted in a now-viral Instagram post. “I worried about the scar and its long-term effects on my body and mind. I feared feeling inadequate, like I hadn’t truly given birth.”

Yet, despite not having the natural birth she had envisioned, Jessica found joy in her experience. “The decision for surgery was tough. It pushed me to learn, to be open-minded, and to let go of my idealistic expectations,” she reflected. “In the end, I achieved everything I wanted from my birth. We had skin-to-skin contact in the OR, I have a video of my daughter’s arrival, my husband cut the umbilical cord, and we delayed cord clamping. Most importantly, my baby was safe and beautiful, and my doctor respected our choices.”

“This scar is a testament to my strength,” Jessica declared. However, she emphasized that her experience wasn’t about comparing methods. “I don’t consider myself more empowered because I had a C-section instead of a vaginal delivery. My strength comes from overcoming my expectations and finding peace with my birth journey. I wanted a natural delivery, but I embraced the path I took.”

I can relate to Jessica’s story. After my preemie twins were born via C-section after three hours of labor, I struggled with feelings of inadequacy. But I’m done with the “what ifs.” It’s time to embrace my scar and be grateful for my healthy boys.

Jessica believes in the power of women supporting each other to recognize the beauty in all birth experiences. “No single birth is superior; each is unique and should be celebrated.”
