As we reflect on 2016, many people have expressed a desire to forget it altogether. From conversations with friends to trending hashtags on social media, the sentiment is clear: “2016 was a nightmare!” “I can’t wait to put it behind us!” “What a chaotic year!” While I understand this perspective, I personally found 2016 to be transformative in many ways.
For me, it was a year of new beginnings. I took a leap of faith, leaving my job to pursue a passion project—a business that truly excites me. Although the journey has been filled with its share of challenges, the overall experience has been enriching. I’ve gained invaluable insights into my own strengths and capabilities, and I anticipate that this growth will continue as we move into the new year.
On a more personal level, I cherished more quality moments with my kids, particularly during the first half of the year when I was able to savor the fleeting time with my youngest at home. For the first time, I enjoyed having my weekends and holidays free, which allowed for more family bonding. I even managed to train for and complete two triathlons! Plus, having a teenager who can babysit has provided my partner and me with some much-needed time together. Yet, it’s undeniable that the global narrative of 2016 was far less uplifting.
The tumultuous election cycle was a significant part of this narrative. Regardless of political affiliation, many can agree that it was a year filled with strife and division. Coupled with events like Brexit, the Zika virus outbreak, and heartbreaking instances of racial injustice, it felt as though the world was grappling with numerous crises. The loss of iconic figures such as Alan Thicke, Carrie Fisher, and Prince added to the collective sense of grief.
Racism and misogyny saw a resurgence, and many turned a blind eye to the hateful rhetoric that permeated our newsfeeds. As a result, some felt compelled to distance themselves from friends who held differing views, further entrenching our echo chambers. The mantra for 2017 quickly became: “Let’s not talk about 2016.” However, I believe that ignoring the past will only exacerbate the issues we face. As philosopher George Santayana wisely stated, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Instead of burying the lessons of 2016, we should embrace them as we set our intentions for the new year.
From my experiences, I’ve learned that a divided society only deepens its divisions by silencing differing voices. So, in 2017, I aim to foster more understanding and acceptance. I resolve to engage in meaningful dialogues, genuinely listening to others instead of simply waiting for my turn to speak. If we, as individuals, can’t find common ground, how can we expect our leaders to do so? Since our political landscape is uncertain, grassroots change is essential.
2016 also highlighted the struggles faced by countless individuals both globally and locally. Recognizing my own privileges, I plan to be more charitable in 2017, teaching my children the importance of giving back. I want to set an example by donating my time, resources, and energy to causes that matter. While one person can’t change the world, collective efforts can lead to meaningful impact.
Additionally, the persistent issues of racism, hatred, and bigotry require a strong stance. In 2017, I will actively oppose these injustices and instill these values in my children. I will empower them to be strong, independent thinkers, reminding them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Equally important is teaching them kindness and the importance of standing up for the less fortunate. By nurturing a generation that listens, understands, and accepts diverse perspectives, we are paving the way for a brighter future.
Let’s view 2016 as a wake-up call that propels us toward positive change in the coming year. Together, we can transform the challenges of the past into opportunities for growth and progress.
