Dec. 31, 2023
As we approach the end of the year, my family has gathered on the East Coast for our annual holiday get-together. I find myself nestled at the grand, intricately carved dining table, surrounded by 15 loved ones. My plate is poised, ready for generous servings of turkey, stuffing, fruit compote, and perfectly cooked green beans. The table boasts an array of wines, a selection of Scotch on the side, and a decadent chocolate mousse waiting for us after the main course. When we unite for our holiday celebrations, food is never in short supply, and there’s always room for seconds and even thirds.
Looking around the lively table, cousins from every corner of the country mingle with aunts, uncles, siblings, and grandparents, all joyfully digging into the feast. These last weeks of the year are dedicated to laughter, family bonding, and reflecting on the experiences that shaped our year. It’s a time to soften past disappointments and embrace the hope of a brighter new year, all while enjoying the comforting presence of family—and perhaps a few extra inches around my waistline.
The allure of crispy latkes with sour cream, buttery Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows, and succulent roasted meats is undeniable. Add in glittering sugar cookies and rich apple pies, along with deep red mulled wine and festive peppermint martinis, and it’s clear I’m indulging a bit too much. Zipping up my jeans is a bit of a struggle, my cozy sweaters feel tighter than usual, and even my bra seems to be working overtime.
This year, however, I’ve decided to embrace that holiday weight gain without the usual guilt. In the past, I’ve been quick to shed those extra pounds after holiday feasting by adding more exercise and cutting back on carbs. But this year feels different. The weight of 2023 has been heavy, with its fair share of challenges. From the ongoing struggles reported in the news to personal family health issues, it’s clear that focusing on calories feels trivial compared to the greater context of life.
The joy of comfort food and the company of loved ones is where I find solace. Regardless of whether times are tough or joyful, we often turn to those we cherish, who frequently come bearing delicious dishes or invite us to share meals. For the first time, I’m allowing myself to find comfort in food and connection without the stress that usually accompanies it.
Every pound I gain this year signifies a moment of happiness. Those peppermint martinis were shared with my lifelong friend, surrounded by our giggling children and extended family. The sweet potatoes? A cherished recipe from my mom that remains a mystery to everyone but her. These gatherings, filled with laughter and shared treats, help create a balance in life that often feels elusive.
I won’t pretend it’s easy to accept the extra weight; I’ve always been conscious of maintaining my health and physique, even at the cost of my joy. However, this holiday season has taught me that relaxing into this abundance feels right, especially after a challenging year.
By mid-January, I’ll return to my greens and lean proteins, dialing back my sweet indulgences. For now, I’m enjoying the warmth of the season, surrounded by love, the scent of freshly baked cookies wafting through the house, and my favorite sweatpants that now have a little more wiggle room. Those cookies in the oven? Completely worth it.

Summary
This holiday season, instead of stressing over weight gain, I’ve chosen to savor the joy of food and family. In a year filled with challenges, I’m embracing every delicious moment, knowing that the love shared at the table outweighs the numbers on the scale. When January rolls around, I’ll refocus on healthier choices, but for now, I’m relishing this festive abundance.
