Life Can Be Challenging, And That’s A Truth We All Share

“Life can be quite challenging, right?” my friend Lisa texted me last week.

“Absolutely,” I replied. We were trying to coordinate a get-together for next weekend, but our children’s schedules, travel plans, and other commitments kept getting in the way. I miss Lisa; she misses me, too. It’s disappointing when life gets in the way of friendship.

This morning began with a leaking bathroom faucet, a shower door that decided to detach, and one of my dogs making a mess all over my son’s piano book. The other pup, or maybe the same one, had an upset stomach and left surprises throughout the house. Our morning rush was chaotic, filled with hurried school drop-offs and quick goodbyes. I found myself on the verge of tears, though I couldn’t pinpoint why. Some days are just tough, and today was one of those days.

“Parenting is such a challenge,” a friend messaged me later. “I feel like I’ve jumped off a cliff without a parachute.”

“I can relate to that feeling almost every day,” I replied.

The endless questions and doubts can be overwhelming: Are they sleeping enough? Are we reading together enough? Is it too late for a comfort blanket or thumb-sucking? Should I allow my son to play football? How many extracurricular activities are too many? Each new phase brings fresh uncertainties, and I often feel like I’m plummeting into the unknown. Parenting, indeed, is hard.

Friendships, relationships, and work can be difficult too. The truth is, sometimes life just feels heavy. Acknowledging that life has its struggles isn’t always easy. We often prefer to discuss challenges after we’ve overcome them, painting a rosy picture of our experiences. We tend to share the stories of our struggles only when they’ve become distant memories.

Yet what about when we’re neck-deep in those struggles? When we’re overwhelmed, lost, or unsure? Where are the stories that say, “I’m there with you”?

I’ve come to realize that some of the most meaningful aspects of life can be tough. Parenting is demanding, nurturing a marriage can be a balancing act, and maintaining friendships can feel impossible when distance and time constraints come into play. Just being an adult often feels like a Herculean task.

The beauty of life—parenting, relationships, friendships—often comes with its own set of challenges. Pretending these difficulties don’t exist doesn’t do anyone any favors. Acknowledging the hard parts doesn’t lessen their significance; it simply reflects the reality that life is a mix of both good and tough moments.

Each day, I remain aware of the richness of life, even on the challenging days. I am grateful for my children, even when parenting feels like navigating a minefield. I appreciate my husband, family, and friends, despite the obstacles that daily life throws our way.

Tonight, Lisa and I chatted about another potential get-together. Living about 1,000 miles apart and juggling our busy lives makes it hard to find time for each other. We both agreed that yes, life can be incredibly challenging. But we also talked about planning another girls’ weekend soon.

“Noodle salad!” I texted, referencing a scene from As Good as It Gets. In that movie, Jack Nicholson’s character reflects on the beauty of life while recognizing that not everyone shares those experiences. We laughed, remembering the good times we’ve had at my grandparents’ lake house, filled with friends, boats, and noodle salad.

The reality is that sometimes life is hard, and sometimes it’s filled with joy. Most often, it’s a blend of both. Perhaps the secret lies in creating joyful moments even when we feel like we’re teetering on the edge. Maybe it’s about enjoying noodle salad—even when it’s a bit messy and the kids are clamoring for pizza. After all, by “noodle salad,” I really mean indulging in cookie dough while sipping wine and texting a friend about how challenging life can be.
