Let’s face it: Motherhood can sometimes feel like an endless cycle of demands and exhaustion. From fetching snacks to cleaning up after little ones, the tasks are relentless. Sure, there are those magical moments that make it all worthwhile, but the never-ending chores can feel overwhelming.

And let’s not even get started on the lack of personal time. It’s virtually nonexistent. Even a trip to the restroom can feel like a luxury. Meanwhile, our partners seem to enjoy uninterrupted bathroom breaks. What gives?

Many moms I know have their go-to vices, those little indulgences that provide relief in the midst of chaos. Some might claim that a brief yoga session or meditation keeps them sane, but let’s be real—when does that actually happen? Such practices require energy and dedication, which can be hard to muster when you’re knee-deep in parenting.

That’s why so many mothers turn to their evening glasses of wine or lukewarm cups of coffee. They’re readily available, relatively inexpensive, and easy to sneak in during those brief moments of quiet. Unfortunately, my digestive system doesn’t play nice with either option. Coffee leaves me jittery, and wine just makes me dizzy—definitely not ideal for a mom on duty.

But before you feel too sorry for me, I’ve found a delightful alternative that brings just as much joy: chocolate. Whether you call it cocoa beans or cacao, it’s my ultimate indulgence.

Every week, as I wrap up my grocery shopping, I make a pit stop at the chocolate aisle and select a couple of premium dark chocolate bars. I’m talking about the good stuff—crafted from the purest cacao and sweetened with “evaporated cane sugar” and “pure Madagascar vanilla paste.” It doesn’t matter if it’s a “superfood” or not; it’s mine, and I cherish every square.

When I get home, I carefully stash my treasure in a secret spot away from curious little hands. Throughout the day, I sneak pieces while my preschooler eats lunch or during those chaotic afternoons when I feel like a deflated balloon. Sometimes, I indulge after the kids are asleep, enjoying a little chocolate at “wine-o’clock.” Thankfully, the caffeine in chocolate won’t disrupt my sleep.

Not only is chocolate a delightful treat, but it also boasts some health benefits—when enjoyed in moderation, of course. Packed with antioxidants and flavanols, it’s even said to be heart-healthy! But let’s be real; the real reason we love chocolate is the way it makes us feel. It releases endorphins in the brain, which is why even the youngest kids associate chocolate with happiness.

Now, I won’t lie—being a chocoholic can lead to some challenges with my waistline. There are times when I might indulge a bit too much, and my body definitely reminds me of that. Still, I believe that sometimes you have to make choices that prioritize your sanity over strict diets.

So, yes, I’m unapologetically a chocoholic. No sharing, please! For more insights on motherhood and related topics, check out this blog post. In summary, motherhood is a challenging journey filled with both chaos and joy. While many find solace in wine or coffee, I’ve discovered that chocolate is my sweet escape. It provides a little happiness amidst the whirlwind of parenting, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
