I Invested in a Disney Princess Makeover, and I Have No Regrets
While I was enjoying Space Mountain alone, my wife took our middle daughter, Mia, to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique near Cinderella’s Castle at Disneyland. No one wanted to ride with me, so I went solo. When I finally made my way back across the park and learned that Mia was getting a makeover—something that sounded incredibly pricey—I felt a bit deceived. It seemed like a clever distraction orchestrated by my wife to pamper our daughter while I was off on my own adventure.
At the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, young girls get to choose their favorite princess for the day (Mia chose Belle), and then they undergo a complete transformation to look like that character. This includes a stunning hairstyle, sparkly makeup, a tiara, and even a photo shoot, along with a special meet-and-greet with a Disney princess. Oh, and the parents get to be called king and queen, which is a nice bonus! I won’t go into the details of the cost, and please, don’t ask; it was a combined gift from my in-laws as well as my wife and me.
I had my reservations about Mia’s princess makeover, not just because of the expense. The first article I ever wrote for a major publication was titled “My Daughter is Not a Princess.” Back when Mia was four and just starting to embrace the whole princess concept, I expressed my desire for her to grow up valuing qualities in people over their possessions. I wanted her to love someone for their character, not their castle or their title.
While I have mixed feelings about her fascination with princesses, I never anticipated how this experience would affect me as a father. Sitting next to my wife, Sarah, on a bench in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, I watched Mia in a salon chair. One stylist worked on her nails while another styled her hair, both dressed like characters from the fairy tales.
Mia was donning a beautiful yellow gown, beaming with joy as she bounced in her small shoes. You could see her happiness radiating from her smile all the way to her toes. When they placed the crown atop her head and turned her around to face the mirror, I held my breath. The curtains opened, and she was met with her reflection in a gold-framed mirror.
In that moment, it felt like Mia’s happiness reached its peak. I had never witnessed her shine so brightly. Then something remarkable happened. The instant she caught sight of herself, I melted inside. A warmth spread through my heart—a mix of pride and love that I found hard to describe. My eyes misted over—not quite tears, but something very close. At that moment, I entered a new realm of emotions that I hadn’t fully embraced before.
What I realized was that Mia felt truly special. In a world where it can be challenging for girls to feel that way—where looks, popularity, and personality often take center stage—this experience allowed her to see herself through a different lens.
As a father, I know Mia is unique. She’s compassionate, fierce, intelligent, and capable of achieving incredible things. Yet, I sometimes wonder if she fully grasps her worth. Maybe this is just a father’s perspective, but there seems to be a disconnect between how I see her and how she perceives herself.
But then, in that magical setting, I noticed that the joy and pride I felt for her was mirrored in her smile. For a brief moment, it seemed like that gap was bridged. I won’t claim that the princess makeover drastically changed her self-perception, nor do I believe it means I can relax my role in helping her grow into a confident woman. I’m not even sure if we’ll visit the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique again.
However, in that fleeting moment, my heart soared, and I know Mia’s did too. She saw something in herself that I had always known since the day I first held her in my arms. And for that reason alone, I have no regrets about investing in her (very pricey) princess makeover.
