Life is full of activities that become easier with practice, like putting off tasks or enjoying a glass of wine. However, parenting is not one of them. The initial year with a newborn can feel like a monumental challenge, and then comes the second year, which might make the first seem like a leisurely stroll. (A “stroll” can mean an easy endeavor or a casual walk — you decide which fits better!)
Every developmental stage of your child introduces fresh hurdles, pushing your patience and sanity to their limits. While you can’t completely prepare for the chaos of parenthood, here are some practical tips to help you navigate the journey:
You can rest when you’re gone.
From pregnancy onwards, expect your sleep to be consistently disrupted, and this applies to both mothers and fathers. You might wonder why a father’s sleep would be affected during pregnancy. Well, he’ll likely be jolted awake by a restless partner discussing the pros and cons of cribs at the most inconvenient hours.
Avoid becoming attached to items that can’t handle a wash cycle.
Your little one will inevitably have moments of sickness—on you, on your partner, and everywhere else. Spills and stains will be a common occurrence, so prepare for the reality that nothing will remain unscathed.
Don’t let Santa overshadow your role.
If you make Santa seem like an all-knowing figure, your 5-year-old might believe he already knows their Christmas wishes. This could lead to unrealistic requests that don’t exist or are out of your budget. You’ll find yourself navigating the tricky waters of holiday expectations without losing your sanity.
Being punctual will become a thing of the past.
Many are unaware that a crying toddler can turn a simple outfit change into a lengthy ordeal. Tasks that once took an hour will now stretch into two or more. Mornings will become a battlefield, and despite your best efforts to plan ahead, unexpected meltdowns will test your resolve.
Traveling with children is a mix of chaos and exhaustion.
Family vacations can be enjoyable… as long as you’re not in the same vehicle as your kids. Stock up on entertainment options like a portable DVD player, games, and snacks to keep them occupied, but prepare yourself for the inevitable chaos. Don’t be surprised if you contemplate an early exit from the car during the journey.
Forget nice possessions.
Kids have a knack for breaking things, from your sanity to your cherished belongings. But don’t fret! Duct tape is here to save the day, along with your credit card for those pricier repairs.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it potty train.
Children have an uncanny ability to assert their will, especially when you’re under pressure. Just when you think you’re in charge, they’ll remind you that they have their own ideas, often at the most inconvenient times. Remember: as a parent, you control very little, except perhaps your caffeine intake and social media privacy settings.
You’ve got this!
Parenting will be filled with challenges and moments of self-doubt, but you possess the strength to face whatever comes your way. Trust in yourself and keep duct tape handy. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us just makes us question our sanity while staining the carpet.”
