Dear Secretary of Education,
I am reaching out with a heartfelt appeal. In the wake of recent events, we have seen a disturbing rise in violence and derogatory remarks directed at our children—our Latino, Black, Asian, and Muslim youth. We have heard chants like “build the wall,” witnessed the use of racial slurs, and seen young women face harassment. This is unacceptable.
I urge you to take immediate action by instituting a mandate that enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy against all forms of prejudice, bullying, and violence in schools. Encourage educators to organize assemblies that promote inclusivity and respect. Equip students with the tools to respond to hostility and promote discussions around safety and acceptance during parent meetings.
As a mother of biracial children who has encountered racial prejudice myself, I cannot stand idly by while these issues are addressed piecemeal. We need a comprehensive and proactive approach to foster an environment of acceptance and safety within our schools. I recognize that while we cannot prevent every incident, we must actively work to create a culture that discourages violence.
Schools should be sanctuaries for all children, allowing them to express themselves openly and embrace their unique backgrounds. They should not have to confront hatred or hostility; it is simply not fair to expect them to handle such challenges.
The well-being of our children is in jeopardy, and this situation demands urgent attention. I have already reached out to our school administrators and superintendent, and I plan to collaborate with other parents to amplify our voices. Each day that passes without action puts more children at risk, and we must not delay.
I am seeking your support in making our schools a safer place for everyone.
Warm regards,
Laura Green
