Parents, beware of a bizarre and hazardous social media trend that’s resurfacing: the “salt and ice challenge.” This reckless game is causing serious injuries, with numerous children ending up in hospitals due to severe burns that could lead to lasting damage.
So, what’s the challenge all about? Participants are instructed to place salt on their skin, followed by ice, and then endure the intense pain until they can no longer take it and remove the ice. The combination of salt and ice drastically drops the temperature, creating a burning sensation similar to frostbite. To add to the absurdity, many kids are sharing photos of their burns on social media, seeking validation through “likes.” It’s truly astonishing how foolish this is.

Images showcasing these injuries are circulating on Instagram, with many kids proudly using the hashtag #saltandicechallenge, seemingly to attract attention. Some of the visuals are shockingly graphic, showing kids even applying salt and ice to their tongues, likely unaware of the potential harm they could inflict on themselves. Seriously, kids?!
According to reports, many participants are left with localized first or second-degree burns, and unfortunately, some have suffered third-degree burns and permanent nerve damage. This challenge isn’t new; it has been cycling through popularity for years. However, due to the alarming rise in incidents, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the U.K. recently issued a warning to parents.
They emphasize the difficulty of resisting peer pressure when friends are engaging in such dangerous activities. “It’s important to remember that it’s not okay to be pressured by friends,” a spokesperson said. They also provided practical advice for parents to help guide their kids in navigating these foolish trends:
- Say no with confidence.
- Avoid judging those who participate.
- Spend time with friends who choose to say ‘no.’
- Suggest alternative activities.
The unfortunate reality is that peer pressure can lead to regrettable choices, as the urge to fit in may overshadow sound judgment. If your child does find themselves participating in such antics and requires treatment for their burn, WebMD offers valuable steps to care for second-degree burns:
- Cool the Burn: Submerge in cool water for 10-15 minutes, or use cool compresses if running water isn’t available.
- Avoid Ice: Do not apply ice, as it can lower body temperature and worsen the injury.
- Do Not Pop Blisters: Breaking blisters or applying butter or ointments can lead to infection.
- Protect the Burn: Cover it loosely with a sterile, nonstick bandage, securing it with gauze or tape.
- Seek Medical Attention: Contact a healthcare professional for further guidance.
