Before I became a parent, I firmly believed my kids would never watch television. I imagined our days filled with crafts, sunshine-filled park outings, and them helping me whip up nutritious meals from our backyard garden. We’d solve puzzles and read classic literature together on a cozy quilt, snacking on fresh fruit. My kids would be so engaged that they wouldn’t even think to turn on the TV.
Then reality hit, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at my naive expectations.
Whether we like it or not, TV has become a staple in our parenting routines. While we do our best to limit screen time, the truth is, kids love TV, and some of the shows they watch are downright painful for parents. I never thought I’d witness the fascination with watching kids unwrap toys on YouTube! And let’s not even start with the theme song of Yo Gabba Gabba!—my ears are still ringing.
If you’re like me, spending time watching TV with your kids can sometimes feel more torturous than enjoyable. I can’t be the only parent who feels like pulling their hair out when kids pick a show that’s definitely not stimulating anyone’s brain cells.
So, what’s a parent to do when they want to cozy up on the couch with their kids but avoid programming that makes them want to scream? Thankfully, I’ve got a few recommendations:
1. Little House on the Prairie
As a child, I dreamed of being Laura Ingalls Wilder, complete with braids. I adored the show, and I was thrilled when my kids found it just as captivating. It addresses real-life issues like racism and bullying, all while showcasing lovable characters. Plus, hating Nellie Olsen together only brings the family closer.
2. Sesame Street
I know, I know—before you roll your eyes, hear me out. This iconic show has been a favorite for nearly 40 years, and there’s a reason why. As a kid, I loved the characters, and as an adult, I appreciate the humor that appeals to parents too. Remember when James Blunt sang “My Triangle”? Admit it, that was hilarious! Give it another shot—you might find yourself enjoying it as much as your kids.
3. Full House (Not Fuller House)
Who doesn’t adore the Tanner family? Little Michelle’s catchphrase, “You got it, dude!” is still iconic. As a parent who grew up with Bob Saget as America’s dad, watching an episode of Full House is a safe bet—no awkward conversations about adult themes are needed here. Just remember to save Fuller House for after the kids are asleep; it’s not exactly kid-friendly.
4. A Series of Unfortunate Events
Your kids likely enjoy the books, and Neil Patrick Harris brings a delightful flair to the series. It’s a win-win for family viewing.
5. Competition Shows
My kids and I have loved following American Idol through the years. From the comedic outtakes to the emotional journeys of the singers, shows like this unite the family. The same goes for Dancing With the Stars and Cupcake Wars—what’s not to love about cheering for the underdog or being inspired by a perfectly executed dance?
6. Anything on HGTV
It’s never too soon for your kids to learn about design principles like shiplap and visual thirds. Plus, Chip and Joanna Gaines have chickens—what’s not to adore?
7. Classic Family Movies from the ’80s
Let’s not forget the charm of films like Harry and the Hendersons. These nostalgic classics are perfect for family movie nights.
As much as we strive to engage our kids in screen-free activities, sometimes curling up on the couch with a glass of wine and a great show is just what you need. So grab your Karate Kid DVD and some popcorn—you’re in for a treat!
