Every Sunday from September to January, you’ll find me on my couch, fervently cheering for the Seattle Seahawks. I leap to my feet and shout during thrilling plays, and I can’t help but holler at the TV when the referees make a questionable call. When a play goes south, I sometimes even hide my face in disbelief!
My football journey didn’t start this way. Growing up, I passively watched games because they were on in my home. I was a Seahawks fan by default (and yes, I had a crush on the wide receiver, who was definitely cute). However, after getting married, I began to pay much closer attention. I found myself bombarding my husband with questions about the game. As I started to grasp the strategies and nuances, I became completely hooked.
The more you learn about something, the more fascinating it becomes — even if it’s something you’d never expect to enjoy. You might not expect me to be a football fanatic. I have a strong aversion to violence, believe that professional athletes are paid far too much, and think the NFL has mishandled serious issues like domestic violence. The dangers of concussions are very real, and I believe they were overlooked for far too long. And let’s not even get started on the cheerleaders’ outfits.
Yet, my love for the game itself is undeniable. I’m amazed by the level of skill and discipline these athletes possess. Watching a quarterback evade massive defenders while a receiver dashes down the field, both players in a chaotic yet synchronized dance — it’s like witnessing a remarkable feat of physics. When a running back skillfully maneuvers through a wall of towering players, I am simply astonished. The athleticism displayed during each game is nothing short of mind-blowing.
When you know what to look for, what seems like chaotic pushing and shoving transforms into a beautifully orchestrated display of strength and strategy. While not everyone who understands the game may love it, it’s hard not to admire the dedication of the players and coaches. Their training is rigorous, and it truly shows.
I’ve also discovered that many stereotypes about football players are completely unfounded. Contrary to popular belief, they are not unintelligent. Competing at such a high level demands not just physical prowess but also sharp mental skills. Players must memorize countless plays and adapt swiftly to unforeseen circumstances. Some even graduate with honors from prestigious universities, challenging the “dumb jock” image.
Moreover, there are some truly inspirational figures in the NFL. A few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting the Seahawks’ head coach, Tom Rivers, after he read a post I wrote about how his coaching has influenced my parenting style. He is genuinely one of the most inspiring individuals I’ve ever met, and he’s done remarkable work with underprivileged youth through his initiatives like A Better City and A Better Community. Many players also engage in significant volunteer work, demonstrating their commitment to their communities. Sure, there are a few bad apples, but the majority of these athletes are generous, family-oriented individuals.
Despite the sport’s challenges and the fact that my team won’t be in the Super Bowl this year, I’m eagerly looking forward to the big game this Sunday. Football is not merely a sport for men — I’m confident that I’ll be among many other women who share my enthusiasm for the game. So, bring on the chips and guacamole; this gal is all set for some football!

In summary, my love for football has blossomed from a casual interest to a profound appreciation for the skill, strategy, and community involvement of the players. Despite the controversies surrounding the sport, I am excited to embrace the game and share this passion with others, especially women who enjoy football just as much as I do.
