Nice Try, Republicans—But We’re Proud to Be ‘Snowflakes’ Now

If I come across one more comment mocking someone as a “special snowflake” or ridiculing their “safe space,” I might just roll my eyes right out of my head! To be honest, I actually prefer the term “snowflake” over the downright offensive label “libtard.” At least “snowflake” doesn’t add to the ableism we’re already grappling with. After all, we currently have a president who mocks those with disabilities, and a secretary of education who seems to lack any real understanding of important legislation like IDEA, which aims to protect students with diverse needs. Then there’s the newly appointed attorney general who suggested that special education laws contributed to the decline of civility in classrooms across the country.

It’s abundantly clear where the GOP stands regarding those who don’t fit into their narrow definition of “normal.” So, there’s simply no need to further insult or demean the special needs community with terms like “libtard.”

Now you’ve taken the word “snowflake” and turned it into your supposed insult for those of us who advocate for things like separation of church and state, equal rights, women’s autonomy, freedom of religion, universal healthcare, and quality education. You want us to believe we’re weak and fragile, just like a snowflake, right? Wrong!

What Do Snowflakes Do?

They unite and create an avalanche. Sure, I know Republicans often shy away from climate discussions, but everyone knows the power of an avalanche. It’s like when people from all walks of life gather to march for human rights or flood airports demanding justice for refugees and Muslims wrongfully detained by our government.

Avalanches are unstoppable. If you challenge an avalanche, who comes out on top? The snowflakes. As Sara Raasch wisely said in Snow Like Ashes, “Even the strongest blizzards start with a single snowflake.”

So, while you may have intended to demean us with this “snowflake” label, we’re not offended. We embrace it! We are snowflakes—strong, passionate, and ready to resist. We stand for clean air, equal rights, affordable healthcare, women’s autonomy, and inclusive education for all. And that’s just the beginning.

So, get ready because a long winter is coming!
