40 Reasons Kids Make the Most Challenging Roommates
If you’ve ever lived with a roommate, you likely have a few tales of woe — or at least some memorable disputes over the quirks of shared living. It’s frustrating when someone isn’t particularly considerate, like hogging all the hot water right before your shower or finishing off the last of the milk when you’re craving cereal. If adult roommates behaved like this on a regular basis, you’d probably be eager to find a new place and hope the next tenant is somewhat courteous.
However, when it comes to kids, nobody warns you that they can be the absolute worst housemates. Thank goodness we love them, as children seem to dedicate their lives to doing things that would drive any roommate insane. Can you imagine how furious you’d be if a “normal” roommate did any of the following?
- Running through the house in the buff
- Plopping down on the couch sans clothes, leaving their bare skin on the cushions
- Standing in front of windows without a stitch on (hey there, neighbors!)
- Leaving the front door wide open, letting all that “bought air” escape
- Always leaving lights on, even in closets
- Surprising you with unflushed surprises in the toilet
- Devouring all your snacks — even the “hidden” goodies
- Taking bites out of apples and putting them back in the fridge
- Licking the cream out of Oreos or finishing off all the marshmallows in the cereal
- Casually leaving empty food containers in the pantry
- Tossing wrappers around the house, including in couch crevices
- Inviting friends over and expecting you to feed them
- Stomping into your bedroom (or bathroom or any space) without knocking
- Leaving toothpaste crusted in the sink
- Creating puddles on the floor after bath time, despite a bath mat being right there
- Making noise and sometimes being downright disruptive
- Engaging in heated arguments over trivial matters with you and their siblings
- Hogging the TV with ridiculous shows
- Using up all the tape, Band-Aids, and Post-it Notes
- Depleting all the soap and shampoo
- Consuming all the shared data
- Hoarding food in their rooms that inevitably rots and smells
- Leaving dirty clothes scattered throughout the house
- Expecting you to handle their laundry
- Not showing gratitude when you do their laundry or pick up after them
- Snooping through your drawers
- Leaving your drawers ajar
- Asking prying questions about your personal life
- Tracking mud everywhere, then not cleaning it up
- Maintaining their rooms in a state requiring hazmat suits
- Waking you up in the middle of the night or at dawn for any number of annoying reasons
- Always wanting to sleep with you
- Bringing home stray animals with issues like fleas or mange
- Interrupting you during phone calls
- Using the last of the toilet paper and neglecting to replace the roll
- Replaying the same songs endlessly
- Crying loudly on a regular basis
- Complaining non-stop about doing even the simplest chores
- Not contributing a single penny
It’s hard to fathom living with someone who exhibits any of these behaviors for an extended period, yet here we are, not only putting up with it but also going out of our way to ensure our little rascals are happy and cared for. What a shift in priorities once you become a parent!
