My partner, Jake, and I aren’t exactly swimming in wealth. There’s no treasure trove of gold coins for us to dive into, like some fictional character. We do, however, cherish our family vacations each summer. Yet, with airfare, dining, lodging, and other expenses, the costs add up quickly, leading to stress and occasional disagreements. So, instead of opting for pricey getaways, we’ve found a budget-friendly and enjoyable alternative: camping!
I’ll be honest; it’s not my favorite pastime. Last year, I struggled to sleep with a critter rummaging around our tent right next to my head. And let’s not forget the bugs and lukewarm coffee. But my kids? They adore it. They truly relish the experience, making it the perfect summer retreat.
At home, my little ones are usually restricted from things like playing in dirt indoors or tossing rocks. However, when we immerse ourselves in nature, I let them revel in the freedom of being outdoors. My kids thrive on running around outside, which is basically the essence of camping. I can’t very well say, “Alright kids, come inside and clean up.” Nope! When we’re camping, they’re free to get as dirty and messy as they wish, which is every child’s dream, right?
Their chores at home involve tasks like making their beds, sweeping, taking out the trash, and tidying their rooms. But camping offers a fresh twist! Taking out the trash means a fun stroll to find the nearest dumpster. Making their bed is a breeze, just a quick adjustment of their sleeping bags. And who needs to sweep? They even get exciting new tasks like gathering sticks for the campfire or hanging their wet swimsuits on tree branches to dry after a day of splashing in the lake. Every little duty is an adventure.
Speaking of adventures, the food is a highlight for my kids. I don’t even bother trying to make them eat anything “unpleasant” when we’re in the great outdoors. It’s all about hot dogs slathered in mustard, a variety of chips, and, of course, s’mores—how could we forget those?
Camping is a wonderful way to unplug and escape the daily grind. Even the most dedicated mom might admit that her kids spend too much time in front of screens. But when we’re surrounded by nature, they can’t do any of that—and they don’t want to! There’s so much to discover. Their only real responsibility is to enjoy themselves: skipping rocks, searching for quirky bugs, splashing in the lake, tossing a Frisbee, or reading by flashlight. It’s all about fun because they get to do things they never experience at home. Isn’t that the true essence of a vacation? To break free from routine and embrace the extraordinary?
Despite our financial constraints, my kids never feel deprived during these trips. They eagerly anticipate our camping adventures, counting down the days with excitement. One day, I hope we can treat them to more extravagant vacations, maybe to Disney World or the Grand Canyon, but I also hope we always carve out time for camping. Cozying up by the campfire, waking to the fresh morning air, and indulging in chocolate and graham crackers until we’re stuffed is good for the soul. I hope these memories stay with them forever.
