My children have a knack for keeping me in the loop about the latest fads. They’re convinced that my go-to leggings and lack of familiarity with current chart-toppers means I’m out of touch with what’s “in.” Sure, my style might not be on point, and I may not recognize half the artists on the radio, but I can still belt out every word to “Rapper’s Delight,” thank you very much.
Capitalizing on my apparent cluelessness, my kids love to introduce me to what they believe are groundbreaking toys. They insist they’ve uncovered the latest and greatest, rescuing me from my own ignorance of pop culture. The twist? Many of these “new” toys are the exact same ones I cherished in my youth. As the saying goes, what’s old is new again!
Rubik’s Cube
At the moment, my kids can’t get enough of the Rubik’s Cube. The contemporary versions come in all sorts of quirky shapes, like triangular and hexagonal cubes that truly boggle my mind. While just a few minutes of twisting and turning can leave me feeling frustrated enough to toss it, it manages to keep my little ones entertained for a fair amount of time—okay, maybe just a few minutes, but I’ll take it!
Spirograph
I adored my Spirograph as a child, so I was overjoyed when my son received one as a gift recently. There’s something oddly therapeutic about creating intricate, flowery designs that I can’t quite put into words.
My Little Pony
Who didn’t adore My Little Ponies during their childhood? If you didn’t, we might need to rethink our friendship! I was absolutely enamored with these beautiful creatures, and I’m thrilled to see their resurgence—appealing to children of all genders, too. Personally, I’m aiming to be Princess Twilight Sparkle when I grow up. #LifeGoals
Mad Libs
Long family road trips were spent playing Mad Libs with my siblings, and now my kids are doing the same. What’s not to love? It’s a delightful blend of silliness and learning, as it teaches them about grammar—despite the fact that their go-to nouns are often “poop,” “penis,” or “pee.”
