Dear friends with your mothers still by your side,
Life can change in an instant. Just ten months passed between the day my mom received her cancer diagnosis and the day we had to say goodbye. This harsh reality is something cancer imposes on families, stealing away not just health but also precious moments. One moment, you’re making plans and sharing laughs; the next, you’re caught in a whirlwind of hospital visits and goodbyes.
I never thought I’d find myself navigating the world as a mother without my own mom to guide me. It’s a journey I never prepared for, and her loss felt like a sudden, uninvited guest that took so much from me before I could truly grasp what was happening.
Yet, my faith gives me peace, and I hold onto hope. Still, this Mother’s Day marks a poignant first for me — celebrating as a mom without my own mother to honor. I’ll receive heartfelt notes and tokens of love, but the chance to reciprocate is gone. I can’t lavish her with the gratitude she deserves for shaping who I am as a mom, a wife, and a woman.
So, to all of you who still have your mothers,
Whether your relationship is close or fraught with distance, take a moment this week to connect. If you find yourselves in harmony or in disagreement, look her in the eyes and share how much she means to you. Regardless of the affection she’s shown or the lessons she’s taught — both good and bad — let her know you appreciate her presence in your life. If she’s been an exemplary mother or if her imperfections have shown you what to avoid, tell her what you’ve learned.
No matter her parenting style, she is still here, and that alone offers tremendous potential for connection. Call her, hug her, and envelop her in your love — even if it comes with a bit of baggage. Seek reconciliation if you’ve drifted apart; engage in compromise if indifference has settled in; invest time and attention if you’re caught up in the busyness of life; or simply reach out with affection if expressing love is difficult.
This time last year, I never anticipated facing Mother’s Day without my mom. Please don’t let another moment pass without cherishing your relationship with yours.
Happy Mother’s Day, friends! May you find the grace to give and receive love abundantly.
