Recycle Your Old Car Seat at Target and Score a Discount on a New One

Target just keeps giving us more reasons to adore them. Not only are they a one-stop shop for all your needs, but now they’re also helping us recycle our outdated car seats. That’s right! You can take those bulky plastic seats to Target, and in return, they’ll offer you a 20% discount on a new car seat. It’s a win for you and the planet.

Event Details

From April 17 to April 30, you can drop off your used car seat at any Target location across the country. In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Target has partnered with Terracycle, a leader in recycling hard-to-process waste. They will transform your old car seats into new products — think bags, gardening tools, office supplies, and more! While we joke that they could just make more car seats, the reality is that this initiative is a fantastic step toward reducing landfill waste.

The Challenge of Disposal

Disposing of old car seats is often a hassle. Not everyone is an environmental activist, but tossing a large chunk of plastic into the trash doesn’t sit well with most of us. While there are a few car seat recycling programs out there, they’re not exactly abundant. For instance, Toys R Us hosts a Great Trade-In event twice a year, with over a million trade-ins to date!

In 2014, Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon, recycled more than 6 tons of car seats, proving that these programs are in high demand. Target’s goal for this event is to collect over 700,000 pounds of car seat materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Target’s Initiative Expansion

After a successful trial run in 90 stores last September, Target decided to expand this initiative. According to reports, drop-off bins will be available in the baby section or near the entrance of the store, and team members will assist you in receiving your coupon. While some may feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of crowded bins, Target has proven they can handle these events with ease.
