After enduring the profound loss of their newborn, a couple welcomed not just one, but two rainbow babies into their lives. A year following the heartbreaking passing of their son, whom they named Oliver, Melissa and Tom Brooks received an unexpected call. They were informed of an infant boy in need of adoption and were asked if they would be interested in providing a loving home. Just one day after this life-changing call, the birth mother went into labor, and in August 2016, baby Leo — their first rainbow baby — became part of their family.
The Brooks sought out photographer Jessica Lane from Birth Unscripted, who had previously captured memorable moments during Melissa’s pregnancy with Oliver. Melissa shared with Home Insemination Kit that being in the same hospital for Leo’s birth, surrounded by familiar staff, felt like a healing moment, allowing them to come “full circle.”
“Leo marked the start of our healing journey and brought hope back into our lives,” Jessica expressed in a message to Home Insemination Kit.
Not long after adopting Leo, Melissa discovered she was expecting again. Grateful for the joy that Leo brought, she found that the challenges of newborn life helped ease the complex emotions linked to her subsequent pregnancy.
“It was such a blessing to have Leo. He truly initiated our healing,” Melissa said. While they were initially told they were expecting a girl, the couple was pleasantly surprised when Melissa gave birth to a son named Noah in March 2017 — their second rainbow baby in less than a year.
Once again, the Brooks turned to Jessica and her business partner, Sarah Miles, to collaborate on a poignant photo shoot. Having supported many families through their own losses, Melissa understood the symbolism of rainbow babies but didn’t have a concrete vision for the photo. Jessica, however, was inspired, and together they crafted an image that exceeded their expectations.
In the beautiful photograph, the two boys were nestled on either end of a vibrant rainbow, surrounded by fluffy clouds, with a butterfly overhead symbolizing little Oliver. For parents who have faced the pain of miscarriage or stillbirth, the profound emotions of welcoming rainbow babies are deeply resonant. This touching image, representing both an adopted and a biological child, alongside a butterfly for the lost baby, truly pulls at the heartstrings.
“It’s been a long journey for this family,” Jessica noted. “The photograph serves as a reminder of the blessings that emerged from their struggles and that Oliver will always be remembered.”
Melissa emphasized the importance of discussing loss with grieving families. Often, people avoid mentioning the deceased, thinking it might cause more pain, but she believes talking about Oliver keeps his memory alive.
The Brooks’ experience has taught them about the ever-changing seasons of life. Recently, Tom faced health challenges, including surgery to remove a tumor from his leg. Despite this, Melissa remains hopeful, stating, “There will always be tough times, but there will also be new rainbows.”
