Recently, a friend shared on social media their challenges with packing for a family getaway. Another chimed in, saying, “I always forget my chargers!” If you’re a parent of a child with special needs, you’re likely thinking, “Forget the charger? Never!” That’s practically a cardinal sin in the realm of special needs parenting. We always have the charger, a backup battery, and an extra set of headphones at the ready.
It dawned on me just how resourceful we special needs parents truly are. For example:
Need a caffeine fix?
We don’t need an app — just place us outside and we’ll sniff out the nearest Starbucks, Tim Hortons, or Dunkin’ within a 10-mile radius.
Looking for a restroom?
No problem! We’ve expertly mapped out the location of every toilet in the vicinity and beyond.
Need to locate the exit?
We’ve already scoped that out the moment we entered the building. In case of an emergency, follow us; we’ll be the first ones out.
Feeling peckish?
We always have snacks on hand because we refuse to let anyone in our care go hungry. If the snacks are gone, no worries — we know all the best drive-thrus.
Sniffling?
Tissues are in our bag. Cut a finger? I can produce 14 different sizes of Band-Aids from my wallet. Got a headache? We’ve got pain relief options, including Advil.
Planning to pack for a three-week trip to Europe using only a carry-on?
We’re your go-to experts because we master that skill every single day.
Is there a tense situation unfolding?
Like trying to talk a child out of the girls’ department filled with Frozen merchandise in the wrong size? We’ve got this handled; nothing stresses us more than that.
And yes, we’re experts at pulling cell phone chargers, laptop cords, and headphones out of thin air. We truly have skills.
