We’ve all had those moments—our child springs out of bed at an ungodly hour, suddenly remembering the One Essential Item they need for school the next day. Cue the sigh of resignation as we throw on our pajamas and dash off to the store, muttering under our breath about how they could forget something so crucial.
But thanks to writer Linda Weston, we now have a visual representation of this universal parenting experience. Linda, who blogs at LifeWithLinda, recently shared a relatable story when her daughter urgently begged for poster board for a project due the very next day. Her Facebook post perfectly encapsulates the chaos of parenting: “Mom! I need poster board!” “What?!” “I need poster board! For tomorrow!” “It’s 9 PM! When were you planning to tell me?!”
I can relate all too well. Just the other day, my son came racing to me in a panic, claiming he’d misplaced his math folder—the very one we bought just last week, which he swears didn’t leave his locker. It was a bright blue folder, clearly labeled “MATH” in bold marker, and now it was MIA.
Linda humorously recounts her frantic search for poster board at home, only to find nothing available. “I went to CVS. No white poster board,” she writes. “Then off to a second store. Finally, I bought the white poster board. Here you go!”
Cue the dramatic outpouring of gratitude from her daughter—kisses, hugs, and declarations of love followed. They finally hit the sack, and the next morning, Linda repeatedly reminded her daughter of the precious poster board. “Don’t forget your poster board. Here it is. Roll it up with this rubber band. Be careful!”
With the One Essential Item in hand, Linda felt like a superhero. “Crisis averted,” she thought. “I’m totally nailing this mom gig!” But on her walk later, she turned the corner toward the bus stop and spotted it—the poster board, abandoned on the sidewalk, right where all the kids had gathered just moments before.
“Bus came. Kids are gone. Everyone gone. Except this. HER G@#%!?#% POSTER BOARD,” she wrote, shaking her head in disbelief. Linda told us she just stood there, staring at it for a few seconds before bursting into laughter. What else could she do?
