Who Needs a Husband When You Can Have a Dog?

Meet my yellow lab, Benny, whom I affectionately refer to as my “Divorce Dog.” Just a month after my marriage officially ended, my kids and I stumbled upon him at the local Humane Society.

When we first laid eyes on Benny, he was a scrawny, anxious pup with a bandaged tail that looked like it had seen better days. We had considered a lovely golden retriever named Daisy, but she wasn’t too keen on the kids. So, I turned to the little cinder-block cage where Benny was waiting and said, “What about this fella?”

After a quick play session, where he feigned interest in a tennis ball (which he still ignores), he plopped down at my feet, leaned against my legs, and let out a heavy sigh. That was the moment I knew he was meant to be part of our family.

From that day on, Benny has been my steadfast companion. He kept me company during those early lonely weekends when the kids were with their dad, motivated me to get outside and be active year-round, and taught all of us that love can be unwavering—even when everything else feels uncertain.

For over a decade, he has bravely defended us against squirrels, leaves, and the occasional rogue wind gust. Sometimes I do wonder—if given the choice between us and an open bag of beef jerky, who would he choose? Despite that, he truly feels like a cherished member of our family.

As we were finalizing the paperwork to adopt Benny, a neighbor who was also adopting a dog stopped by for a chat. He remarked, “Every kid needs a dog,” and I smiled, thinking, Maybe every divorced woman could use one too.

Cheers to Benny: the ultimate foot warmer, the joyful tail-wagger, and the couch potato extraordinaire! I recently shared my love for him on social media, inviting others to showcase their own “Divorce Dogs” (or cats!). The response was overwhelming!

Looks like Benny is far from alone in his canine companionship.

In conclusion, while companionship comes in various forms, sometimes all you need is a loyal dog to remind you what unconditional love truly means.
