I’m Running for Congress Because It’s Time for More Moms to Take the Lead

Hello, I’m Jessica Thompson, a proud mom of three energetic little ones: Jake (4), Lily (3), and Mia (just 9 months old). And guess what? I’m running for Congress!

Now, I can imagine your first reaction: “Three kids under 5? How on Earth will you find time for a campaign?” Well, the answer is straightforward: my country needs us. Truth be told, it needs you as well. My whole family is excited to embark on this wild and rewarding journey together. I assure you, this family-focused campaign will bring a fresh perspective to American politics.

You might recall that this isn’t my first venture into the political arena. Last year, I ran as a Republican for a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives. I genuinely believed my background as an educated, family-oriented woman would be welcomed to diversify the party. However, the local leadership was anything but supportive, prompting me to reconsider my political home. While I’m still the same person, I’ve come to realize that my values align more closely with the Democratic Party. We believe in collaboration, equality, and that everyone deserves a fair chance in life.

Let’s face it: our country is in chaos. The negativity and division clouding America are palpable, and that tone has been set by those at the top. When we look at our representatives in Washington, what do we see? In my opinion, far too many politicians who are disconnected from our daily lives and struggles. They seem to have lost touch, and honestly, they’re not even trying to hide it anymore.

Most of these “leaders” lack firsthand experience of our challenges. They don’t understand what it’s like to have half your paycheck go toward childcare—an expense we need just to work. Rising healthcare costs? They haven’t felt that sting. And don’t even get me started on student loan debt—it’s basically invisible to them, even though it’s a ticking time bomb for our economy.

Why do we continue to vote for them? Often, it’s because we feel there’s no better option. We often settle for the lesser of two evils. Isn’t it time to change that narrative? Don’t we deserve representatives who truly understand the challenges of raising a family today? Who better than a mom to represent us in Washington, DC? We know how to balance a budget, collaborate effectively, and yes—clean up a mess!

I’m running for Congress because I’m acutely aware of the challenges we face, and I refuse to let another moment pass without our government tackling them head-on. Our government should mirror the diversity of its constituents. We need teachers, nurses, mechanics, stay-at-home parents, and every other profession you can think of to bring their unique experiences to the table. Ordinary citizens should never feel excluded from the political process.

As Jodi Baker, a well-known business leader, once said, “How many of you were truly prepared to be a parent before diving in? Anyone? And yet, you did it—the hardest job in the world. So why fret about a position that doesn’t hold a candle to being a parent?”

Now more than ever, I’m determined to advocate for the families of Ohio’s 16th District. My previous opponent is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, so a rematch could be on the horizon. To him, or whoever emerges from that primary: BRING IT ON! I’m ready to debate the issues anytime, anywhere. All I need is a chance to share our vision for this district and our country.

Moms, it’s time to roll up our sleeves. We have a nation to rejuvenate!
