A Heartwarming Encounter at Disney Saves a Father’s Life
In a remarkable turn of events, a father of five received a new lease on life due to a clever t-shirt and the magic of Disney. After enduring years of dialysis, Robert Thompson found himself in need of a kidney transplant and decided to take matters into his own hands while visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with his children.
Thompson, a single dad, expressed his love for his kids, stating, “They are my everything; they motivate me to keep pushing forward.” To raise awareness for his situation, he designed a t-shirt that boldly read, “In Need of Kidney O Positive.” Given that he is an O positive blood type, he could only accept a kidney from someone with the same type. He told a local news outlet, “Where better to get noticed than at Disney, surrounded by thousands of people every day?”
On the same day, Maria Lopez was at the park with her husband, who spotted Thompson and suggested they take a photo to share online. “My husband asked if we could take a picture with him. He turned around with the biggest smile, grateful for the attention, and encouraged us to share his story,” Lopez recounted. This photo quickly went viral on social media, drawing attention from around the globe to Thompson’s search for a donor. In no time, calls from people wanting to help began pouring in. “The response has been overwhelming. I can hardly contain my emotions,” Thompson shared.
Despite the initial wave of support, finding a suitable donor remained a challenge. Approximately 50 individuals began the donor process, which includes blood tests, psychological evaluations, and other medical assessments. Ultimately, only three potential donors emerged, none of whom were perfect matches. Then, a fellow single father, Jake Reynolds, learned of Thompson’s plight and reached out. To Thompson’s relief, Reynolds was a match, marking the end of his four-year wait. “I called my children, and we all wept tears of joy,” he said.
Following a tour of New York City led by Thompson, both fathers prepared for surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital earlier this month. The procedure was a success, and both men returned home to their families a few days later. “It’s not a big deal,” Reynolds told a local news station. “If only people understood how simple it can be to donate, we would have a lot more donors.” They both hope their story shines a light on the fact that kidney donors can lead long and healthy lives. “Everyone has two kidneys,” Thompson emphasized. “We all have a spare. Share it.”
The need for kidney donors in the United States is critical, with approximately 12 people losing their lives each day while waiting for a transplant, and over 101,000 individuals currently on the waiting list, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Thompson’s message to others still searching for their donor match is simple: “Stay hopeful; your time will come. Positivity is key.”
