In the realm of Disney literature, there exists an abundance of guidebooks focusing on various themes—be it dining, budget-friendly tips, or running events. However, prior to the release of “Mouse Ears for Everyone,” authored by Sarah Collins, no guide specifically catered to families with disabilities.
Collins, a former Disney employee and parent of two, one of whom has autism, was taken aback by the absence of targeted resources. “After failing to find relevant information online, I realized I needed to create this book to assist families seeking guidance,” Collins shared with us. “It was disheartening to see our community overlooked, and I felt compelled to address this gap.”
Initially intended as a resource for families with autistic children, Collins’ guide encompasses a broad spectrum of disabilities, including sensory sensitivities, mobility challenges, food allergies, and other medical requirements. Drawing from her extensive experience of 30 trips to Disney, as well as insights from families, Disney employees, and cast members, Collins crafted a detailed resource. She also encourages readers to provide feedback through the “Mouse Ears for Everyone” platform to ensure the guide remains comprehensive.
“While Disney offers a variety of accessible options, not every aspect is designed with access in mind,” Collins explained. “For instance, certain queues may not accommodate electric conveyance vehicles, necessitating a transfer to a standard wheelchair provided by Disney. Some attractions require lifting family members, while others allow for wheelchair use throughout the ride.”
Collins notes that the accessibility of resorts varies. “I particularly enjoy the Caribbean Resort for its pool facilities and transportation options, whereas I would advise against selecting Disney’s Boardwalk if accessibility is a priority.”
For families uncertain about Disney’s accessibility, Collins reassures them that adjustments can be made to enhance their experience. “Things may not be flawless, but they can still be magical,” she emphasized. “Preparation is key, and a pair of noise-canceling headphones can make a significant difference. Disney prides itself on excellent customer service and aims to accommodate all guests.”
To help children acclimate, Collins recommends showing them videos of attractions and parks beforehand. “This gives them a heads-up about the size of characters like Mickey and prepares them for potentially dark rides,” she noted.
