The enthusiasm is evident nationwide. Recently, around 2,000 Moms Demand Action volunteers and survivors of gun violence convened for an advocacy day in Georgia. In Raleigh, North Carolina, over 350 people gathered for a new member meeting, while Fayetteville, Arkansas, saw more than 200 attendees. In Rhode Island, the demand for new member meetings was so high that we had to host daily gatherings in various cities to accommodate the influx of volunteers.
This movement spans both red and blue states, reflecting a collective desire for change. To keep pace with this growing interest, Moms Demand Action volunteers have even begun organizing impromptu meetings in local homes and cafes. At a recent gathering in Arlington, Virginia, over 200 individuals attended, filling the space when chairs ran out.
We are already translating this energy into tangible actions. Following the Parkland shooting, Moms Demand Action volunteers generated more than 2,500 phone calls and 1,700 emails directed at Florida legislators in a single day. Their advocacy played a pivotal role in halting a proposed bill to arm teachers in K-12 schools. We have similarly thwarted detrimental gun legislation in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Dakota, and Utah—bills supported by the NRA that would have jeopardized the safety of our children and communities.
Moreover, we are actively facilitating the passage of beneficial legislation and reforming corporate policies. In the wake of the Parkland tragedy, Oregon volunteers successfully advocated for the closure of the state’s “boyfriend loophole,” which aimed to disarm domestic abusers. Recently, in response to public outcry, over a dozen businesses severed ties with the NRA.
The momentum is unmistakable: advocates for gun violence prevention are mobilized and invigorated. From state capitals to corporate boardrooms, we are achieving victories.
Finally, Americans appear to be prioritizing the fight against gun violence. Although mass shootings represent only a fraction of gun-related incidents in the country, their profound impact resonates deeply within the national consciousness. It is crucial to remember and act in memory of the countless individuals affected by gun violence who do not make headlines daily. Every day, 96 Americans lose their lives to gun violence, with hundreds more injured. This reality is intolerable, and we have reached a critical juncture. We refuse to accept a status quo that allows unrestricted access to firearms without accountability. We will not tolerate the recklessness, cowardice, and inaction of lawmakers beholden to the gun lobby.
This issue transcends political affiliations; it is fundamentally about preserving lives. Lawmakers have been alerted by the American populace: they can collaborate with us to safeguard lives, or we, the voters, will ensure their removal from office.
